Army, Navy ‘disappointed’ as MoD defers crucial missile buys

The Army and Navy, which had anticipated a tough decision at November 11′s meeting of the Defence Acquisition Council, were left disappointed with sensitivities forcing Defence Minister AK Antony to err on the side of caution. The Army was expecting approval for a deal for Israeli-built SPIKE man-portable fire-and-forget anti-tank and anti-personnel guided missiles with a tandem-charged HEAT warheads for as many as 356 infantry battalions.

The deal with the SPIKE’s maker, Rafael of Israel, is apparently contingent on the findings of an independent committee that has been mandated with looking into the feasibility of concluding deals with the company in the light of continuing CBI investigations into the Barak point defence missile deal. In fact, the DAC meeting on Monday was also supposed to consider a follow-on purchase of over 250 Barak-1 point defence missile systems for warships including the navy’s sole aircraft carrier INS Viraat.

The Navy has been concerned that the Barak system suffers from a shortage of munitions in the Indian fleet and that this could affect the overall capability intended. The LR-SAM or Barak-8/NG programme, a DRDO-Israel joint development programme intended to provide the navy with a Barak-1 replacement is nowhere close to operational service, though it will be a far more capable and longer range weapon once ready.

i mean u have a lawyer as a defence minister for god's sake.at least make defence minister from science stream,,,,,this may looklike a trivial thing but these things do matter

i am all for this but pls read what i am gonna say

1)our growth will be only 4% in next 2-3 years atleast

2)defence budget is gonna fall as stated in another thread

so what is the point of all this when we don't simply have the means right now??

why did govt pass food security act??
why didn't they set up factories instead of 2 lakh crore per year subsidy??
why did they pass land acquisition act which will make it 100% impossible to buy land for commercial purposes??
why were we buying tatra trucks for all these years??
why is no effort being made to privatise hal and drdo and bel??

last of all and i know ppl will laugh at me for this but

WHERE ELSE WE ARE GOING WRONG??

1)POLICE IS NOT INDEPENDENT.................police reforms have been held for years

2)judiciary is super corrupt(its a fact) whether its supreme court or high court.all the lawyers have nexus with judges and thats the reason a case is taking 15-20 years.everyone knows who is guilty in any case but despite evidences cases get prolonged for years.

3)indian education system is stuck and stagnant

a)be it iit's ot nit's the level of research is zilch
b)bad teachers
c)poor infrastructure
d)way way less seats

4)we the people---------------everyone is corrupt,,i can vouch for this.even our parents,relatives etc all want to save money by hook or crook so untill and unless we can stop ourselves and our own family from this we have no right to say that politicians are corrupt as they also come from us

Which is most likely why he strictly goes on according to the rules and regulations, which then are correct, since a minister can't make his own decision at his own will.
However, he is taking that too seriously in some cases (LUH competition), while in this case, the report itself says:

So you can't blame him for doing his job according the rules and as long there are investigation going on against this very company and this very weapon system, you obviously can't give a go ahead for a procurement.

Btw, a defence minister is not meant to make the forces happy!
