UNBconnect... - Army camps to be pulled out from CHT: official

Reported in: National
Dhaka, Dec 1 (UNB) - The government will take steps to gradually pull out army camps from the Chittagong Hill Tracts (CHT) to fully implement the CHT Peace Accord signed in 1997.

“Some 235 army camps have been pulled out from the CHT so far and the remaining ones will be withdrawn gradually,” said CHT Affairs acting secretary Nabobikram Kishor Tripura at a press conference at the Secretariat on Thursday.

About the implementation of the CHT Peace Accord, he said the government has already implemented most sections of the treaty.

He said the government is working to amend the CHT Land Commission Act 2001. “The draft law has been sent to the Land Ministry to review it.”

About NGOs, which are working on the CHT, Nabobikram said the Ministry of CHT Affairs formed a monitoring cell to watch the activities of NGOs.

He said the ministry has taken various progarmmes, including cultural festival and fair, to observe the 14th anniversary of the CHT Peace Accord.

Prime Minister Sheikh Hasian is expected to inaugurate the festival at Osmani Memorial Auditorium in the city on December 4.

Newly appointed minister and AL leader Obaidul Quader will inaugurate the fair at Shilpakala Academy on December 5.

is CHT declared as disturbed area by B.D govt????? if yes then presence of army is understandable & if not then police is more than enough to maintain law & order.

Police cant even maintain **** in the cities ........ they are not capable for that kind of stuff in CHT ........... Communication in those areas is really a chaos. Even the widest roads are not exactly of 1 lane :P ........ Moreover, the police does not have enough training nor equipments and let alone the required funds for such massive level of operation required out there.

Army may not be the ultimate solution....... but it is the most effective solution we have. By taking out the army, we are indicating to the locals that we will subdue to their desires. We actually are making a division among the Locals and the Bangalees. What we should do is try to behave in such a way that makes them believe that they belong to BD as a whole ....... just like any of us bangalees .

As for being a disturbed area......... half the dam place is totally inaccessible ......... totally remote and out of reach of any basic security that is supposed to be provided by the State. And i believe foreigners require special permission to go there ....... and that tells the story. Even the Gov is not confident enough about the current state of law and order in that area.

Army camps will be out, ok. But there is army base in the Hill tracks, right, in bandarban, Khagrasary and Rangamati?

Yup, Army bases wont be moved out.

I think we should replace army camps With RAB to maintain law and order:)

Right time for India to support the insurgency again. CHT is important for India :)

You are most welcome to do it... but do not forget your bharat ma already tried it and failed. Bangladesh has the confidence level thats why they are removing the army camps... but does India has the balls to remove 400000 army from NE India... answer is no as the whole region will be break apart from India.

Who knows maybe India influenced this decision to pull out troops.

Think about your NE India which without presence of heavy army will go out of Indian hand... n for CHT it does not matter whether army camps now remain there or not as the backbone of Indian funded shanti bahini already broken...

but you did not answer 1 question does India has the ball to remove 400000 army from NE India...as many of you claims locals of NE India does not support the separatist movement!!!

I have heard recently some NGOs trying to convert people to christianity in Ctg hill tracts. ... Government should take care of this...
