What is the population of Lanka compared to any of our cities?

Probably we are six times as dense as any of their cities. And also lot more tourists visit Lanka and their GDP largely depends on tourism dollars.

I myself was away from my country for about 25 years and when I returned I found it very disconcerting to find all the litter on the streets. As long as people keep flocking into cities for better life, the municipalities have to keep pace with the civic amenities. It requires proper planning and money and it is in short supply if you talk to any municipality.
Also too many things are being assigned to municipalities to handle and they don't do anything up to mark.

Well yeah like i said in my first post India's massive population and density in cities is probably one of the reasons they lack civic sense, But then on the hand cities like Tokyo is also just as much or more densely populated.. I reiterate, educating the population of good habits needs to come with strong deterrents.. If not they would not care, And politicians will make political decisions regardless the benefit to society like some others have commented, Does'nt matter where they come from.. Case in point in todays news.. Vote bank politics at work

Well yeah like i said in my first post India's massive population and density in cities is probably one of the reasons they lack civic sense, But then on the hand cities like Tokyo is also just as much or more densely populated.. Same problems they face, we face in our cities also. Street hawkers are every where and they set up shop right on the pavements. They can't find work in the formal sector. It is like do or die situation for these hawkers. Politicians can't promise them jobs, so they allow them to scrape their living on the pavements. There goes the civic sense down the drain.

This is not a troll thread or meant to offend anyone, this is a genuine question. Are Indians dirty? I mean the way they don't care about the environment, when they defecate in public etc? I know that India has 1 billion+ people but what I have read and heard about India is that it's a filthy country. It seems to me that Indians don't care about their country, even though they keep bragging about it, the public health system is broken but yet I don't see Indians caring? Is this true?

the general traditional indian culture is selfish, callous and promotes a dog-eat-dog mentality into every generation... why india is dirty is also in the same background as why last year 69 people died of hunger in the tea plantations of darjeeling while no dog in india goes hungry... india lacks a communitarian culture.

however, there are good people too who wish and work for radical change... i am speaking of real progressives and not the idiotic nationalists who chant "india, superpower by 2020" in every breath.

some of the progressives are the traditionally disciplined ones like the socialist movements... others are general civilians like these ( The Ugly Indian ).

Not sure how you can boldly claim on the highlighted part. And why would i even confuse myself with a two days old member besides keeping clean for most may be out of personal choice and interest but for us it's half the faith.

Actually Sri Lankan people are no different. One of the problems is that people in Sri Lanka just don't know how much of a hell it is. Poor infrastructure, unorganised streets, chaos in road etc. Sri Lankans (including the ones who study/work and live in the west who are the most retarded of them all) think that Sri Lanka is a "paradise" which is obviously not the case so they miss on how much work is needed to turn that country into a place at least you can call home. How many people do you think at least know the importance of development? Very few.

And Gotabaya Rajapaksha should become the president of Sri Lanka. He is probably the only person who is capable of doing something properly. I grew up in Colombo and it was unlivable shithole of a city back then. During Gotabaya's time, it was at least a bit livable. I don't know how it's like now. Funny thing is, back in his time, I can remember how many Sri Lankans were whining against beautification project saying that gota is "wasting public money" or that "Sri Lanka is becoming a shit hole".

the civic sense aspect is well known but it can be changed by showing a life that is cleaner and better. People in cleaner localities do not litter as much. I think we behave a bit like dogs.

I am not too sure it can be; its South Asian mentality in general. I saw how Little India in Singapore was markedly different than the rest of Singapore despite being cleaner, more developed and better run than probably any Indo-Pak-Bangladeshi locality in our countries.

And @Gibbs is right to point out, albeit much more eloquently so, that we South Asians are massively socially retarded in many areas.
