An average Pakistani consumes 130 Kilos of wheat per year.

An average American consumes 120 Kg of meat , and 63 Kilos of wheat per year.
An average Pakistani consumes just 20 kilos of meat and 130 Kilos of wheat per year.

The apparent low consumption of meat and very high consumption of wheat in Pakistan is due to our dietary habits which comprises of "Roti Salan".
For an American a bowl full of meat balls can be dinner , but a Pakistani will never eat a bowl of "Koftay" on it's own . It will have to be accompanied by two three roti.
Being the largest consumer per capita of wheat, we get out main nutrition from wheat .
Meat contains 52% proteins and about 15% fats , and wheat has about 28% proteins and 3% fat , but with the added benefit of high quantity of carbohydrates which meat lacks. Carbohydrates are the main source of energy for the body.

For a Pakistani, his roti is the main source of proteins . Requirements of fats is met by consuming milk and dairy, in which Pakistan ranks 4th in the world in both production and consumption. Then the amount of oil we use while cooking is also much higher than western countries. That too is our source of fats.

Overall we are not doing too bad in meeting our dietary needs. It's just that the composition of our food is different from developed countries.

Although it may be pointed out that we Pakistanis as a matter of habit don't eat much fish and fruit. Fruit is consumed mainly in the month of Ramazan and Fish is a few times an year delicacy. We will benefit from increasing the consumption of sea food as a source if proteins, fats and other nutrients, and fruits as dietary supplement for Vitamins.

Roti Salan is best. Three big tandoori roti and any Salan.
Now our dietary habits are changing

People are more into western style foods which may be a health hazard for us.
In my childhood I remember we only ate two roti with an onion salad and salt. That's it.

Indian consumption of Rice per capita is 80kg vs Pakistan 13kg.
South and Eastern India is Rice consuming areas

Rice make you small and weak. Milk, wheat and meat make you strong and well build. Pak milk consumption per capita is 5-6 times higher then India.

Protein quality is about the same, raw energy supply per person about the same.... and India scores higher overall though both countries about the same overall.

Pakistan does a lot worse in nutrition of its poorer segments as seen by hunger index (and also improving way slower than India):

Don't give me BS statistics of 5 - 6 times milk per capita consumption. The raw milk production (say adding cow + buffalo + goat) can be found on FAO quite easily. At most Pakistan per capita consumed double that of India.

Sir BS "index" stats are manipulated, we should look at real consumption data.

Meat per capita 20kg vs 4kg
wheat 130kg vs 60kg
milk 160/kg vs 30kg

Rice I'll give India that, they eat more rice on per capita basis. But real deal is wheat, everyone eat roti unless he can't afford it.

Diet should be dependent on lifestyle. Any Pakistani with office lifestyle should adopt Mediterranean diet. I was in Turkey for a while and initially the diet was a surprise. The typical plate was 1 part salad, 1 part bread or rice and 1 part meat (sometimes less depends on the dish). The food was grilled and used very little oil or butter. The locals drank ayran with meals (lassi).

Our desi diet is suitable for people who have an active life. Eat traditional food sparingly or if you eat more frequently have smaller portions and exercise regularly.

You provide no sources for the data. FAOSTAT already disproves it for milk (India total production of milk is almost 4 times higher than Pakistan and its population is about 7 times higher....you do the math for per capita....its definitely not 5 - 6 times).

Wheat...well rice makes up huge amount for Indian diet as well (hence total carb intake - as measured by FAO is about the same for both countries, slightly higher in India).

Quality protein intake is 39 g/capita/day for India and 41 for Pakistan (and some really low number for BD).

These are all direct numbers from the FAO....not indices. What is your source?

Plus dietary habits for wheat over rice preference vary. Pakistan attitude to it is not absolute (its not even absolute within your own country as seen by your compatriot comment preferring biryani over roti etc). For example when rice was in short supply in South India during wartime (and wheat was provided in cvilian ration instead) people became very unhappy and it led to subsequent loss of power for state govt (one among many factors). So no idea why you making it some absolute definition of what is better. What matters most is the overall diet and access to enough balanced food and quality protein. Both countries still have some way to go to match more developed countries.

And whatever milk we drink beyond childhood is mostly overkill. Only 18% of Indians are lactose tolerant.

The tallest people in India are now Keralites ( as per govt stats - which can be googled ) - their diet is mostly rice, fish and coconut. Hardly any wheat and meat is less common than fish.

No doubt. The two weeks I spent I'm Istanbul were the healthiest in my life. Also their preferred oil is olive oil, which is much healthier than sunflower oil. Our diet as others have said is very much suited for physically active people, but in this day and age when more and more people are working in offices, dietary habits need to change.
