Amir Khan says he "would love" to box for Pakistan at the Olympic Games in Rio de Janeiro.

Khan's comments came after the International Boxing Association (AIBA) announced on Wednesday that professional boxers would be allowed to compete in Brazil this summer.

Bolton-born Khan shot to fame after winning a lightweight silver medal for Great Britain at the 2004 Olympics in Athens as a 17-year-old

Khan subsequently turned professional and in 2009 outpointed Andriy Kotelnik to win the WBA world super-lightweight title.

The 29-year-old - whose most recent fight ended in a brutal knockout defeat to WBC middleweight champion Saúl Álvarez - hailed the ruling by boxing's governing body.

"It's a decision which I welcome," Khan said at a press conference in Karachi.
"It will help boxers and if I am permitted as per rules and from my promoter then I would love to compete for Pakistan. I will be very happy if I can compete in the Olympics. I want to serve Pakistan."

Khan's father, Shah, hails from a village close to the capital Islamabad but migrated to Britain, where Amir was born in 1986.

Pakistan Boxing Federation secretary Iqbal Hussain said he was thrilled at the prospect of Khan representing the country.

"I have to check the rules whether Amir can compete or not but it would be a huge boost for us if it happens because he is our hero," he said.

Khan's younger brother, Haroon, was blocked from representing Pakistan at the 2012 London Olympics as he had represented Great Britain at junior level.

.
I doubt he will be able to compete for Pakistan. Sporting authorities are usually quite strict on such matters once an athlete has competed for one nation.

. .
Sounds like utter rubbish, he can't. He has represented the UK.

. . .
That would be treacherous....unless he gives up british citizenship of course

The rules are quite strict regarding fighting under one flag for the games and then another. Boxers have fought for a different country and then made another country their adopted home as a pro.
Anyway it's not a great move and his image will be mocked by the British public. You can't go from waving the union jack to this and expect your doubters, critics and outright haters to say to the the average joe "we told you about him".

UK allow dual nationality and many British born Pakistani even caste their vote in Pakistan. I dont know about rules of boxing so cannot comment on it but he just expressed his wish to represent Pakistan only if rules or his promoter allow it ..who care about what public think of him. If British born Pakistani appear in news for bad activities then they suddenly become more Pakistani than british but when they are doing job of mayor or professional cricketer and boxer then they are just british

Pyre of bullshat being erected to burn Amir Khan. In sport paddling for more than one country is quite common. Zola Bud the South African born long distance runner represented Great Britain in 1984 Olympics but in 1992 Olympics represented South Africa. Now she lives in USA where she takes part in marathons.

Boxer Lennox Lewis born in UK represented Canada in 1988 Olympics but is regarded as one of the greatest British boxers. Nobodsy toasted him for being dual national.

There are many other examaples. Amir Khan get's the flak simply because of his heritage. The fact is non of his detractors here would last longer than 60 seconds face to face with him. He lost. Big deal. What matters is he fought in one of the most toughest sports there is and he made his mark there. Boxing is not a charity. Yet he had his moments. If any of you gobshites think differant why don't you have shot at it and see how far you get.

Fact is most South Asian's play puffter sports. This British Pakistani went into sport dominted by Black people and made greater impact than any other person of South Asian extraction has done including ocean of humanity called India numbering 1.3 billion.

Chew on that fact.
