After the 1948-49 war the next best chance for Pakistan to gain or at least made advances in Kashmir was in 1979--the year when the Soviets invaded Afghanistan. India was only nonimally non-alligned then and was so firmly in the Soviet camp then India even participated in the 1980 Moscow Olympics while a good number, if not the majority, of the world boycotted that event. That's just one example of who stood where then. Americans were desperate for Pakistan's help. Heck, it could be argued that Soviets were even lured to invade Afghanistan to be stuck in a quadmire. A revenge for Vietnam. Pakistan had the backing of most of the powerful world countries outside of the Warsaw Pact. At least the Pakistani planners could have bargained for more in Kashmir. But that was not done so. The myopic General Zia even lost parts of Siachen in 1984, let alone gain something.
All that is, of course, water under the bridges of the vast Sub-continent.
So now, I don't think Pakistan is any position to 'win' Kashmir militarily. But nor can India. There are enormous peace dividends waiting for both nations. Andorra model or the Chenab formula. Whatever. The end goal should be only to give peace and dignity to all Kashmiris while ensuring that Indus River is not used as a tool against Pakistan.
