Ahmedabad's CEPT Univ to provide consultancy service to Lahore's Metro Bus!

AHMEDABAD: Who do civic authorities in Pakistan's second largest city — Lahore — turn to when they want to improve their bus service? They have requested experts from Ahmedabad's Cept University to give inputs towards improving Lahore's latest public transport service — Metro Bus System.

A small stretch of the multi-crore service is being inaugurated on Sunday and the authorities have invited Cept experts to Lahore to help them replicate the success of Ahmedabad's Bus Rapid Transit System (BRTS). This is the first such bus service anywhere in Pakistan.

The invitation is from the chief executive officer of the urban unit of Punjab state, Nasir Javed, for an 'urban forum' organized by state government there. Javed wants Cept experts to stay back for a few meetings and share their experiences in implementing the BRTS network. The forum is for civic authorities in Pakistan to discuss urban issues. The Cept team will reach Lahore on March 11.

"The Lahore authorities were interested more in the operations of BRT. They are keen to know about implementing smart card ticketing, GPS enabled services, scheduling and security," said a senior faculty member with Cept University.

Some 45 caterpillar, or articulated, buses would run on the inaugural stretch in Lahore between Chungi Amar Sidhu and Gajjumata. A special purpose vehicle the Lahore Transport Company ( LTC) has defined two corridors on which the service will run — Ferozepur Road line extending 28 km and Multan Road Line which is 12 km long.

Cept University's associate director Shivavand Swamy said, "The Lahore team had participated in Asian BRT meet in Ahmedabad and now they have invited us there to share our experience."

In 2010, Cept University was given the status of centre of excellence in the area of urban transport and research by the central government. The Ahmedabad BRTS has won both national and international awards since it was implementing in October 2009.

This includes the International award for Sustainable Transport Award - 2010 at Washington DC, the National Award for Best Mass Transit Rapid System Project - 2009 from the Centre and the International Award for Outstanding Innovations in Public Transportation - 2010, Germany.

Well there is nothing to improve in BRT. Just the people who are using it !

ya.. I had seen the news...I think the service should seriously reconsider 30-day free service strategy!!! or by the time this 30 days ends, all the bus will be back in the shed for repairs!! lol!!
