Arent you guys confusing the two? Public service is indeed a noble profession - and many people do that including NGOs, religious organizations, corporate houses etc. Politics, in this context, is about being elected to represent a people, not doing public service. Power comes with this particular territory.
So i again reiterate my point, politics is all about power.

Elections are held to represent the people in the govt. and run the govt. on behalf of the people. That is public service and it is for that sole purpose politics provide power to the elected representatives.
