KARACHI: Experts on Saturday urged that government should promote medical tourism including hair transplantation as this can also bring foreign remittances in Pakistan and would increase public revenues.

Almost 200 foreigners visit different cities of Pakistan every month for hair transplant which shows their trust on skills and capabilities of Pakistani surgeons.

This was stated by hair transplant surgeons while delivering their lectures and later talking with media persons during opening session of the second annual three-day meeting of Hair Restoration Society of Pakistan (HRSP) held here on Saturday in a local hotel.

Experts said that the Pakistani doctors are providing a world quality hair transplant service which is attracting foreign patients.

At present, almost 200 foreigners from gulf countries, Europe, USA, Canada and Australia visit Pakistan every month for hair transplant because this treatment in their countries is 10 times higher as compared to Pakistan, said Dr. Hanif Saeed.

"Government should promote medical tourism like other countries in the world and this will also promote soft image of Pakistan," said Dr. Hanif Saeed.

We provide world quality hair transplant services attracting foreign patients. This can also bring foreign remittances in Pakistan increasing public revenues, he explained. Experts have said hair transplant in foreign countries is 10 times more costlier than Pakistan.

Another speaker Dr. Tahir Shaikh said Government has imposed 13 percent GST on hair transplant surgery which should be exempted as this is also a treatment and every patient has the right to get treatment without taxes. We will also send our recommendations to Pakistan Medical & Dental Council to regulate this sector.

People facing hair fall issues are also suffering psychological pressures and loose their confidence in the society, Dr Shaikh added.

Renowned plastic surgeon Professor Faiz, Dr Zulfiqar Tunio, Dr Muhammad Iqbal and Dr Arif Husain from Canada also spoke on the occasion.

He forgot to mention that many of these are Pakistani origin residing in those countries..

I live in Pakistan. Trust me do not use doctors there. They cut corners and you may end up paying with your life. Infection control is nit a priority. Go check the state of hospitals. Do not listen to locals that brigadier such and such is an amazing surgion etc. I wouldn't trust a pakistani doctor or indian bangaLi doctor in their respective countries no matter what

Don't implant, rather shave rest of the head. Bald is beautiful.

I believe that Turkey is the leading country in this sector worldwide - thanks to our Arabian neighbors.

Looking to get a hair transplant? This country leads in the business of harvesting hair.

Nurses graft hair’s roots onto the patient’s bald area. The roots have been extracted from the back of the man’s scalp, and are being transplanted one by one into the small holes previously created on the front of his head. The entire operation takes between eight and 10 hours. (Emanuele Satolli)

With $1 billion worth of business in 2014 alone, Turkey is the leading country in the world for hair transplant surgical operations. The average cost of a hair transplant operation in Turkey ranges from $1,700 and $2,000, while the same operation in Britain or the U.S. could cost up to $25,000.

The number of patients who pour into the country to graft their hair is approximately 5,000 per month, with some 3,500 coming from Arab countries (mainly the Gulf nations and Saudi Arabia). Photojournalist Emanuele Satolli moved to Istanbul in 2015 and began observing the large number of health tourists pouring into the country. The lure of cheap costs for large operations, specifically hair transplants, has made the country a major center for foreigners seeking affordable cosmetic beauty treatments.

The fact that Arabs are such a large part of the total number is caused by a number of factors. The hot and dry climate of their countries, the habit of covering their heads, and the use of purified sea water for personal hygiene all can contribute to hair weakening. And in Arab culture, strong hair is often considered highly desirable for men.
The technique employed is known as FUE (follicular unit extraction). It consist of harvesting around 4,000 individual follicular units from the posterior scalp, and meticulously transplanting each one of them where needed, accordingly to a predetermined density and pattern.
Most Arab patients take this opportunity to come and spend four or five days in Istanbul with their families.
