2,000 foreign troops to be deployed to Turkey-Syria border: Report

Nearly 2,000 foreign troops are expected to be deployed along Turkey’s border with Syria to operate the surface-to-air Patriot missile batteries, a report says.


The Turkish daily Today’s Zaman on Tuesday reported that the troops will be from the United States, Germany and the Netherlands. The three NATO members have agreed to send the missiles to the border region.

Last week, US Defense Secretary Leon Panetta said in an exclusive interview with CBS News that Turkey will receive six Patriot missile batteries from the US, Germany and the Netherlands, the only three NATO members with the most advanced type of such missiles.

All the six batteries will be under the NATO command and are expected to be operational by the end of January 2013.

Panetta said the missile batteries are to bolster Turkey against what he called ‘attacks from neighboring Syria.’

Hundreds of Turkish troops will also provide security for the foreign troops as they operate the Patriot system.

The agreement to deploy missiles on Turkey’s border with Syria comes after months of fierce fighting between the Syrian army and the foreign-backed militants.

Many people, including large numbers of security forces, have been killed in the turmoil that began in Syria in March 2011.

Turkey claims it needs the Patriot missiles to defend itself against Syria. However, members of the Turkish opposition say there has never been any threat from the Syrian side and that Ankara’s claim is to strengthen Turkey’s own military presence in the region.

I am afraid that is boloney. Turkey does not operate patriots. As far as I know, there isn't a single personnel in Turkey who is trained to use these systems. How long do you reckon it would take to train 2000 Turkish personnel to operate these systems? Even if they pass through a few months of training I personally don't think we can get the most out of these systems as they would not be familiar and comfortable enough. And add the fact that we need these systems yesterday ...

If i gave you a javelin(just example) in your hand and you never used it would you know how to use it without training? . Plus the patriots are only for a year depending on syria situation and against there scuds. Plus patriots are much more complex than my example.

Its not 2000 troops its less , as far as i can remember from news around 500 from germany , 400 from holland and like 500 from USA .

I am by no means knowledgeable on this topic. However, AFAIK PAC-3 can only intercept missiles in terminal phase, that is, the last ~30 seconds of impact with it's limited range. In order to protect istanbul or Ankara, the missiles will have to be engaged in midcourse or earlier phases which these patriots are not capable of. I think these are placed specifically to protect Incirlik AFB and Kurecik radar. I might be wrong though

2 Batteries along with German 400 Troops
2 Batteries along with Dutch 360 Troops.

Total troops is 1160 from foreigners troops arriving in Turkey. Who are those 840 troops ?
