As the government scrambles to cut costs given the dismal growth rate, defence spending is one of the hardest hit with the projected Budget of Rs 2.03 lakh crore coming up to barely 1.79 per cent of the Gross Domestic Product. This is a record low for India in at least three decades, with the figure dropping considerably from 3.16 per cent of the GDP in 1987.

RAW gets 1 billion dollar. Some body posted an article on it few months back.
RAW has been given importance these years to step up the security internal and external too.

nobody knows howmuch they get..even the CAG who is a constitutional body appointed by the warrent and seal of the president do not have absolute powers to audit their budgets..dont trust some b.s media notes

I guess we will have secret budget allocations apart from the official....

I hear India's Fiscal deficit has come down to 4.6% so does make sense in forgetting about any defense Expenditure cuts.

The FM already said during the session that the MoD will get more money if they ask for it.

use money on research on army equipment , we are become market of weapons

so can anyone tell me how much is this amount as a percentage of our GDP!i mean is it less than the usual 2% cut off or have our defence budget exceeded the 2% of G.D.P. milestone.man i am tired of these politicians:hitwall:,when our ex-generals are asking the Govt. to increase the defence budget to atleast 3% of our G.D.P. there have hardly raised it to 1.86% of G.D.P. last fiscal year.hope this year its above 2% when our neighboring countries are spending such huge amount in the defence sector we should also start to do the same otherwise a time will come when we'll be caught with our pants down by our neighbors:coffee:!

Some important points:

The allocation is up by Rs 25,169 crore from last year’s revised estimate of Rs 1,78,503 crore.

In terms of comparison between the budget estimates of the financial year 2012-13 and 2013-14, the hike is 5.31 percent.

The budgetary allocation this year marks a reduction in GDP ration from 1.90 last year to 1.79 percent.

This will include Rs 86,741 crore for capital expenditure.

The allocation is about Rs 50,000 crore less than the ministry’s demand but Defence Minister AK Antony was satisfied.

Of the Rs 86,741 crore capital expenditure fund, the IAF has the largest share of over Rs 38,000 crore followed by the navy and the army.

India Reins In Defense Spending

NEW DELHI — India hiked its defense spending by only five percent on Thursday for the next financial year, far below previous increases, with the military one of the apparent losers in the 2013/2014 budget.

Finance Minister P. Chidambaram raised defense spending to 2.03 trillion rupees ($37.45 billion) for the fiscal year starting April 1, up 5.2 percent from 2012-13, when the budget stood at 1.93 trillion rupees. In 2012-13, the increase was 17 percent, and the year before, that spending was bumped up by 12 percent to fund a modernization program that has turned India into the world’s biggest arms importer.

Overall budget spending for next year was increased by 16 percent, with funds focused on rural development, health and education as well as infrastructure ahead of national elections in 2014.

“I assure the house that (defense spending) constraints will not come in the way of providing any additional requirement for the security of the nation,” Chidambaram told parliament. The minister earmarked $16 billion as “capital expenditure” — meaning spending on hardware. Domestic security experts warned India’s annualized inflation rate of at least 6.0 percent meant the million-plus military gained little from the modest increase.

“The condition of India’s defense services will remain the same, and the step will slow down the modernization process of the military,” Afsir Karim, a retired general, told AFP.

India hiked its military spending by a huge 34 percent in 2009-2010 over the previous year after the 2008 attacks in Mumbai by Pakistan-based gunmen killed 166 people and revealed gaping holes in the country’s security setup. Mrinal Suman, who heads the military unit of Confederation of Indian Industries national trade lobby, highlighted how the defense ministry often struggled to spend the money allocated to it.

“Budgetary allocation is not really our concern because funds can be made available when needed, but the defense ministry must spend the money given to it,” said Suman, one of India’s top procurement specialists. He said a string of scandals involving defense contracts — most recently involving AgustaWestland helicopters bought from Italy — had slowed arms purchases because policy-makers were reluctant to take risks on new ventures.

India’s former chief, V.K. Singh, in a letter to Premier Manmohan Singh that was leaked to the press, warned last March that the condition of the military’s combat units was “alarming” because of equipment deficiencies.

India is negotiating a series of huge procurement contracts, including for 126 French Rafale fighter jets, 400 combat helicopters, as well as artillery, drones and electronic warfare systems.

Please it is still a 14-16% hike,7-8% in real terms, yes it's not the double-digit increase we've become accustomed to but it is still a serious increase and it isn't a CUT so I don't think it is fair to take this kind of tone. Considering we've been hearing from these foolish media outlets for the past few weeks that the defence budget of 2013-14 would be cut, an increase if a cause for celebration. Right now the Indian economy is going through a short-term rough-patch it is sensible that all spending by the GoI is looked at. In a few years the budget will again be increasing double-figures year on year.
