PLAN’s Xia submarine to Pakistan?

Here is a nice summer reading.... according to Commander Muhammad Azam Khan, Pakistan Navy (Retired)'s latest article published in the summer issue of The US Naval War College Review. "Options for the Pakistan Navy", leasing of a Xia class SSBN to the Pakistan Navy is a "viable choice"

The once slowly expanding military ties between Beijing and Islamabad have now matured into a strategic partnership, as is evident from local production of the JF-17 Thunder multirole fighter, the Al-Khalid tank, and F-22P frigates.This partnership is further evidenced by the PLAN’s regular participation in the large multinational AMAN series of exercises hosted by the Pakistan Navy. Pakistan’s strategic community and Beijing could plan the training and subsequent lease of a nuclear-powered submarine.

The PLAN’s Xia submarine could be an appropriate start. A pool of selected Pakistan Navy officers could be trained to operate an SSBN, with theoretical/academic work ashore followed by operational training at sea and finally a strategic deployment. Though such a plan seems ambitious and the PLA Navy’s SSBNs rarely prowl far, this remains a viable choice that would serve the two countries well strategically.

Well if Pakistan has any intentions of acquiring a nuclear sub then PN should try to get some advanced one but if Xia comes with JL-1 SLBM then it would be great

oh its just a blog.Why in the world would Pakistan want an SSBN and that too type 92.It would be better that if Pakistan got type 214 and try it to convert into launching cruise missiles just as Israel has done with dolphin class.

Why do you think it would be great.

Can your Navy pay a Billion dollar a Sub.Chinese are very secretive at these matters so you think they will just give the sub even Russians only give away for lease but cannot officially sell the N subs to India its against International rules.

Besides N subs are noisy compared to modern non nuclear subs such as Type 214.Only advantage N subs have is endurance but your enemy is not 10,000 miles away its just next to your door step.

N subs are very good compared to Diesel one

and pak should go for marlin classs because they said they are better then the one offered to india the scorpene

1.Type 214 can be modified.

2.Have you read my above post.

3.Marlin is no where in sight.The only sub was 214 but was lost due to the kickbacks.

Good news if true.....
In my opinion it may be as it was in consideration since some time.
PN wants 7 subs..
As suggested by many news sites Pak Navy was thinking of co operating with china on submarines and other military hardware.
Im positive we will see a good impact with major inductions in PN.From F-22P frigs, OPH,milgem corvettes,fast attack crafts,7 subs and FT2000 in future.
Plus the N.Sub hopefully Inshallah

Rumors of Pakistan leasing N Submarine were around, but this somewhat confirms it......


So far every rumor about Pakistan Defence is turned out as a reality...

There is no urgent need for Nuclear subs , if we have 10 new conventional subs that give us 2 months of operation in sea we are good

Nuclear subs are trouble if anything goes wrong

I prefer we make sure our shores are clean must learn form accident of other na, tions how sometimes oil greedy corporation can destroy eco system and habitat

We should first invest in local nuclear plants with security safeguards on small scale untill we master that for 20-30 years we should not jump the gun on nuclear bandwagon submarines

Well it's good if it is true. Even though I don't know why PN is going after nuclear sub. We should have spend this money on any other conventional sub with better weapons which match our needs.

Nuclear sub is out of the equation for now as we are currently struggling to keep up the numbers of conventional attack submarines. The contract for the U boats is long over due, yet no news seem to come.
For the future and when and if our economy improves, a chinese nuclear sub might come our way.

meh xias are old, 30 yrs old now, and it was china first attempt so not everything went right and it had to under go extensive maintenance and has most likely never left chinese waters, and one was even lost. after the maintenance(radar, paint, new tiles etc) it was better but still im glad they are retiring it and getting the type 94's which are far better which will be a credible deterrence against far away targets, but i suppose as a minimum deterrence it might work but i dont think Pakistan should go for the xia.

The Type 092 is an obsolete noisy boomer.

Maybe the Type 094 would be a better option.
