What's new

India to build second aircraft carrier

how 5?

one we have. (which we will retire)
one we are getting now from Russia.
IAC-1
IAC-2

so 4 at max right if we think we will not retire current AC and also get IAC-2.

Please tell me how 5. that would be too good a thing really...

INS Vikrant(decommissioned/reserve)
INS Viraat( in service)
INS Vikramaditya(trials)
INS IAC1(uc)
INS IAC2(planned)

INS Vikrant(decommissioned/reserve)

INS Vikrant is a decommissioned ship & now a museum it is not in reserves & cannot be used in war.

vikrant will join indian navy in 2016 due to delays.
but the pipapav shipyard is indias biggest shipyard when we can give cochin a chance to build for the 1st time why can't we consider pipapav

nope, pipavav has just started building naval ships it is a new shipyard, CSL is a very old shipyard & has made enough warships earlier, AC building is not an easy job, it will take more time(may be 10 years) for pipavav to complete the ship. first pipavav should be given OPVs, frigates, etc. orders than only it can build AC.

Only 3 till 2017 (see trials by 2016 of IAC1). By the time IAC2 goes for trials, INS Viraat will be decommissioned.

it can be used with some minor refitting, in 2006 it was planned to train the IN in sea but lack of funds cancelled the approach.

India should really think about one of the Elizabeth class carrier built by the UK (talks were there of UK offering it to India), it's of much greater size & more capable, it will make IN a truly blue water navy.

it has a price tag of $7bil, and can carry hardly upto 50 fixed wing aircrafts plus 10 rotary wings, the maximum. while you are making IAC-1 for hardly around $2bil which has capability of 40 fixed wing + 10 rotary :undecided:

The contract for the vessels was announced on 25 July 2007 by then Secretary of State for Defence Des Browne, ending several years of delay over cost issues and British naval shipbuilding restructuring; the cost was initially estimated to be £3.9 billion.

while IAC-1 matters to India for gaining experience of having home built AC and also, if you do investments of $2bil in India then government gets back at least $1bil through different direct and indirect taxes itself :enjoy:

while IAC-2 is planned for around $5bil, as a Super Carrier capable of 70+ aircrafts, may be nuclear powered, with the amount invested in home industries to gain experience on it also. also, it is believed that main technologies of Elizabeth type ACs will have been common till 2018 :meeting:.

Russia also has a plan for a nuclear powered Super Carrier by 2022........

oh my mistake anyways thanks fro clarifying it
but by 2015 china will also be near launching its indigenious aircraft carrier atleat1 if not 2

Elizabeth class carrier is STOVL type and India prefers STOBAR configuration with ski jump. But Let's see what they decide.

The old vikrant has been turned into a museum, you can't count it as a reserve :undecided:

goto post 20 :)

But IAC2 will have catapults for launching fighters not STOBAR like IAC1 vikrant.

even IAC1 would have CATOBAR for arrested landing. But going for Elizabeth class carrier would be costlier.
But India should also try its hand on EMALS configuration currently under development in US.

No, building a nuclear powered carrier is something it should do by itself.

Every indian project gets delayed by 2-3 years. Its become normal in every field or we are used to it :).

thoda 19-20 toh ho jata hai.......

No, building a nuclear powered sub is something it should do by itself.

I am saying that in parallel to IAC-2 construction, IN should also buy AC from UK it will up the no. of ACs with India & make it an undisputed power in IOR.
