Lt Gen Asim Munir selected as new army chief

Maa sha Allah! Hafiz e Quran too

Just few thoughts on stuff people are putting out there.

1. Bajwa made a deal for his extension but got played etc. etc.

No, there was never such a deal. Bajwa is no fool. This theory is wrong for two reasons. Firstly IF AT ALL someone makes such a deal it is with solid guarantees and you bloody well get it implemented. Secondly no one in the army is particularly fond of extensions for army chiefs, especially not other generals. Only one guy likes it...yeah the one who gets it. If it is accepted by others it is accepted due to government decision and discipline. But getting another extension after two full terms is next to impossible unless you stage a coup and take over the govt. Any COAS who goes for a further extension would find himself extremely unpopular among his own generals. Remember he knows he has to retire eventually and wants to remain in favour of those who will come after him. A controversial general like Bajwas, even more so. Hence Bajwa wanting an extension or not knew it wasn't practical. Because of constitutional change he can't even get 3 more years, only a year or so before he reaches mandatory retirement age. What then? Why alienate other generals for 1 year only? So the game as I once stated long before was never extension...rather it was to get his choice of new chief.

Hence all theories of extension etc. are nothing more than wild theories.

(Allah knows best though, we can but reason).

2. Bajwa cleverly manuevered to get his choice. Gen. Asim was his choice all along.

Allah knows Best but all indications are that he wanted one of Sahir Shamshad and Azhar Abbas and didn't get his wish. Still he did manage to retire honourably (such as can be) and on good terms with other generals.

3. Imran Khan cleverly manuevered to get his choice. Gen. Asim was his choice all along.

This one is most interesting "theory". I think it is also unlikely. Again Allah knows best but all available best evidence points to something else.

4. Nawaz Sharif chose Gen. Asim as result of a deal between them.

Another interesting theory. Also propogated by IK himself without names. Again as I said in a post before it is very very unlikely. No 3-star general will give the kind of assurances a supposed deal under this theory would require. Still Only Allah knows best if there's any weight to this theory.

5. Why ON EARTH did Nawaz choose Gen. Asim then?

It is simply for one reason. It is political reasoning of course. Among all the candidates he wanted to choose the one who would be worst for Imran Khan in his thinking. Now other generals in GHQ, Corps Commanders etc. may be privy to a lot of stuff but they do not work directly with the PM. Only Army Chief and DG ISI work directly with the Prime Minister.

Two of the Six candidates were known quantities in this respect, as they had both worked with IK as DG ISI. Other four were unknown quantities. One of the two supposedly had very good relation with IK. The other supposedly had a tense relation with IK. (not one alleged incident but more).

Nawaz Sharif knows Imran Khan can come back to power, but even before he does he is still a national leader. New COAS has to engage with him no matter what. Therefore NS does NOT want new COAS to have a good relation ship with IK. This is one of the more important goals of PML(N) for future politics.

Now no one can accurately predict what kind of relation a brand new General-- one who will engage directly with IK for 1st time-- will develop with IK. Here fate grants NS a general who has ALREADY worked directly with IK and allegedly didn't hit it off with him. So NS reasons that he will not get along with IK as army chief either. IK will also have less of an opportunity to charm him since this General is not forming a first impression. He also happens to be the senior most. What better choice then??

It is sad reality but all political parties want thier opponents to have a bad relationship with Army/Establishment. And this is the bet NS has made in choosing Gen. Asim. But it's only a bet.

There is no deal on Gen. Asim's part. All army chiefs are ultimately their own men and also prevailing circumstances have a big impact on decisions they make in addition to their own personalities.

There is no doubt Gen. Asim will once again have to engage with IK, him being one of the foremost national leaders. Vice Versa same for IK. Now the challenge is for both of them as to what they can make of it from now onwards.

HOWEVER Gen. Asim in particular faces the HUGEST challenge of restoring the Army's severely battered reputation. This is the mess and the legacy Gen. Bajwa has left for him. One does not envy him his task.

Enigma SIG likened this COAS to the Murderers of the Imam in Karbala in a post that you have already read and replied to. :(
Do you even understand how the examples are given and that these examples DO NOT in anyway suggest that someone is equating someone with a muqaddas hasti?

Saying that Huffaz were among the ones who martyred Imam Hussain (RA)... meaning being a hafiz doesn't necessarily mean that he is definitely the best person.

But my question remains.. how is that comparing with "Imam Hussain (RA)" as you suggested?

Also, what's with "I am like Muhammad". May I know who you are referrring to?

These are extremely careless statements. I suggest you to consider removing them. I know you have a love of current setup and you despise IK and his supporters.. but there are other ways to counter them.

Is this even possible since he is retiring on 27th ?

According to my understanding of Pakistani laws, it is illegal.
The PM cannot extend his retirement as an Army General. The legnth is only extended for 3 years when one is selected as COAS, otherwise according to Army ACT every General retires on its retirement date.
There is a problem of 2 days, he wouldn't be Army Serving general after 27th unless he take charge as COAS on that date. Which he is not. Untile 29th Nov, Bajwa is still COAS.
It is definitely illegal. It is a joke, like everything else is in Pakistan. They have not change the army act, therfore, he cannot be COAS due to not a serving Army General on 29th.

most Syed are either Shia or Urdu speaking or both
They are fake Syed. 90% of desis are fake Syed’s. Specially those that are Urdu speaking Shia because vast majority of them are Hindu converts and over the years upon their conversion they adopt different last sir names. Genetically they are light years away from any thing Syed or Mideastren looking.

Watch Aljeera documentary on Dalit Muslims. A Hindu Dalit converted due to discrimination and adopted Sheikh as his sir name to bury his background.

@PakSword your objection on doorstar's choice of words is pretty valid but to be honest Enigma SIG's statement is also pretty objectionable. Whatever argument he wanted to make he didn't need to jump and say "Huffaz murdered ImamHussain". He too should have picked a better example for his argument. His post was deeply offensive and objectionable.

it's very rare to see a non-shia Punjabi speaking Sayyed and that too in potohar of all places, the most clanish part of Punjab
sayyedization process of our region didn't really happen, most Syed are either Shia or Urdu speaking or both, I have yet to see a non shia, Punjabi syed in my life
maybe they exist but they are like unicorns

I think he might be a Urdu speaker settled in pindi, dk

Or Kashmiri. Lots of Kashmiri Shias claim to be Syeds.

So lets put the events in order:

1 - The required summary wasn't being sent to the PM. The temperature reached to a point where some ministers started threatening that the PM doesn't need any summary to go with the appointment. (My assessment: Summary didn't have Lt Gen Amir's name in it. Lt Gen Amir was the first choice of Zardari and second choice of Nawaz Sharif)

2 - Suddenly, one guy comes forward and accuses Nawaz of murder and assassination attempt. Nawaz runs away.

3 - The next day, a PDM's favorite journalist (who happens to be establishment's biggest critic breaks a story that makes international headlines)

4 - Summary comes with 6 names

5 - Imran Khan says he will play within the laws and regulations when summary is forwarded to the President.

6 - PDM (that in my assessment was trying hard for Lt Gen Amir) becomes sure that Imran doesn't like Lt Gen Asim at all. They also remember the story of removal of Lt Gen Asim from DG ISI post. This situation (together with the prospects of a further bonus of possible rift between PTI and the next Army chief from the first day) helps them in selecting Lt Gen Asim right away. All of them then wait for IK to delay the proceedings.

7 - President, after a short consultation with IK, attests the PDM's choice.
What’s your interpretation of these events?

Purely ethnic governance is not a good idea. It should all just be on talent and merit. Always remember what this woman said:

Yes I agree, I'm also an advocate for strict meritocracy but I suggested that as more of a temporary suggestion.

If you look at all the candidates we have, no one is truly immensely capable to change the country's fate, they don't have that level of credibility, experience or qualifications. Pakistan's situation is in such a state that even if it can just get an honest government that serves our interests, even if it isn't the absolute best, it's still better than PDM and the other sell-outs, which is the main reason for IK's popularity.

And right now the immediate solution would be jumping to some competent muhajirs who won't have bias and literally left their country for this state, other than PTI/IK. After other policies are implemented to strengthen the base then you can easily diversify from the entire population. It's these weak fundamentals and decentralised society which makes room for corruption and these incompetent generals to run things behind the scenes.

Solutions at this level are always dynamic, and ever-changing, you might require a certain policy to be implemented before another can be introduced. One policy doesn't last forever, it's just a door to another.

Muhajirs are the least biased or opportunistic from all the other ethnic groups, because they have nothing to be biased towards apart from Pakistan itself.

If PTI wants honest and loyal people, best place is to look in the muhajir population.
