Elaboration of working construction documentation (WCD) for the G5 fighter jet of Russia has been completed, RIA Novosti reported with reference to Air Forces Commander-in-Chief Col.-Gen. Alexander Zelin. The drawings have been passed to a manufacturer that will make a development prototype.
Most likely, the G5 aircraft developed by Sukhoi Design Bureau will be produced in series at facilities in Komsomolsk-on-Amur. A maker of engines will be determined via a tender.

Sukhoi Design Bureau has been developing a front aviation G5 fighter jet of PAK FA Project since late 1990s. The promising aircraft is also known under the names of I-21, T-50, Izdelije 701. According to the chiefs of Russia’s Air Forces, this jet will be tested in summer of 2009 and launched into mass production early in the next decade.

Su-47 (S-37) Berkut Experimental Fighter Aircraft, Russia

The Sukhoi Design Bureau of Moscow, Russia has developed the Su-47 (previously called the S-37 Berkut or Golden Eagle) fighter aircraft, which first flew in September 1997. Su-47 is in a forward swept wing configuration and uses a highly unstable triplane (with three main lifting surfaces) aerodynamic configuration. The Su-47 completed the first stage of flight trials in December 2001. In May 2002, Sukhoi was selected as prime contractor for the next-generation Russian PAK FA fighter programme. The PAK FA will be a development of the Su-47 but without the forward swept wings.

The design of the very high manoeuvrability prototype is based on the avionics and aerodynamics technologies developed for the Su-27 upgrade programme. Some of the systems and component designs from the Su-27, (the all weather supersonic fighter aircraft with NATO reporting name Flanker), have been used in the Su-47, for example the design of the canopy, landing gear, some of the avionics and the near-vertical tails.

Russia to build fifth-generation fighter prototype soon

MOSCOW, August 8 (RIA Novosti) - Russia will soon start construction of a prototype fifth-generation fighter plane, Air Force Commander Alexander Zelin said Wednesday.

The Russian Defense Ministry has long announced plans to develop a new-generation fighter under the federal defense procurement program until 2015, and contracted the Sukhoi Design Bureau, the developer of the famed Su fighter family, to design the new aircraft.

"At present, we have completed the development of technical documentation for the fifth-generation fighter and passed it to the production plant, which will start construction in the near future," Colonel General Zelin said.

The new fighter will be built at the Komsomolsk-on-Amur aircraft-manufacturing plant in Russia's Far East, but the manufacturer of the engines will be chosen in a tender, the general said.

Sergei Ivanov, a first deputy prime minister supervising the defense industry, said in May that Russia's fifth generation fighter will take to the skies by the end of 2008.

The Air Force commander also said Wednesday that Russia would deploy advanced unmanned aerial vehicles (UAV) with flight range of up to 400 kilometers (250 miles) and flight duration of up to 12 hours by 2011.

The UAVs of both fixed- and rotary-wing types will perform a variety of tasks, including reconnaissance, attack, retransmission of radio signals and target designation, the general said.

Russia's fifth generation combat aircraft to fly by late 2008-Ivanov-1

MOSCOW, May 22 (RIA Novosti) - Russia's fifth generation fighter will take to the skies by the end of 2008, a first deputy prime minister said Tuesday at a session of a government military commission.

"We are nearing the end of research and development work, and Mikhail [Pogosyan, the head of Sukhoi aircraft maker] confirmed that the first plane will make its maiden flight in late 2008," Sergei Ivanov said.

Ivanov, who oversees industrial development and is seen as a candidate to succeed President Vladimir Putin in elections next spring, said the new fighter will become the mainstay of Russian frontline aviation in the 21st century.

The minister said the new multirole fighter, developed by Sukhoi design bureau, will feature high maneuverability and stealth to ensure air superiority and precision in destroying ground and sea targets.

"The development of a new generation aircraft will certainly boost the authority and competitiveness of the Russian defense industry on global markets," Ivanov said.
