NEW DELHI: With 'Metro Man' and rumoured NDA candidate for President E Sreedharan by his side, Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Saturday inaugurated Kochi's first metro rail service that's said to have many 'firsts' to its credit.
Highlights
  • The Kochi Metro is India's first integrated multi-model transport system
  • The rail network will be the country's first government agency to hire transgender people
The PM cut the inaugural ribbon at the rail network's Palarivattom station. He then rode a train from there to the station in Pathadippalam. Also present at the inauguration were Kerala chief minister Pinarayi Vijayan, urban development secretary Rajiv Gouba and Kerala chief secretary Nalini Netto, among others.

The Kochi Metro is scheduled to start commercial operations on Monday from 6 am onward. On the day, trains will begin operations simultaneously from Aluva and Palarivattom stations at 6 am. The day's rides will end at 10 pm at Aluva. As many as 219 trips are scheduled for Monday.

The Kochi Metro will have many 'firsts' for India. The city will be the first one in the country to have a 'water metro', which will be a feeder service to the rail metro. That will in turn make it India's first integrated multi-model transport system.

This new metro will also be India's first to extensively use solar panels. As many as 22 stations on the final 25-km full stretch of the rail line will have solar panels. The Kochi Metro plans to meet 25 percent of its electricity needs from solar power.

The rail network will be the country's first government agency to hire transgender people; 23 are expected to be on duty for the inaugural run. And in another likely first, the metro network will use compost generated from municipal waste to fertilize the vertical garden it plans to maintain on some of its pillars.

Kochi Metro officials said on Friday that the rail network will increase regional connectivity for residents in the Greater Kochi metro area.

"I think the Metro adds yet another feather in Kochi's cap," said Ajithalekshmi an employee of HDFC Bank, to TOI on Friday.

Being from Kochi, this metro seems a let down as of now. Only 13kms completed and the metro has not entered CBD. That's where it matters. Besides, What the city needs is more of infrastructural projects like building flyovers, bypasses and straightline highways connecting suburban towns like Muvattupuzha, Kodungallur, Cherthala, Perumbavoor etc.

OT: Modi was welcomed by a Beef fest in Kochi :D .

Brother, similar statements were made about Delhi Metro back then. Today its a shining example of a modern efficient public transport system at par with best in the world. So for your city, a beginning is made and i do hope it grows from strength to strength from here.
PS: I'll be in Kerala this winter and hope to travel on this service. :smitten:

He is the Prime minister of entire country. There is no your PM, my PM.

Already have something kind of a NH. Though it's getting crowded. Kerala already has enough roads. We need to maintain them in good shape.
It is even hard to construct more roads when people are reluctant to give away land for development projects. Take Malappuram for example.

BJP Claims Modi Made Kochi Metro A Reality; Project Was Started by Manmohan Singh

To not see the face of dishonest PM of India, I left Kochi early, while he was on at 10-30. I am allergic to this man.

The foundation stone of the Kochi Metro was laid by Dr. Singh on September 13, 2012.

Started my journey from Kochi to Kanya Kumari by Taxi.
Distance 350 Km.
Took me 7 hours to reach.
No expressways.
Shame.
Lack of funds.

Funny to see everyone wants to claim the success of metro. But they initially tried to stone wall the project and E. Sreedharan. Going for Global tender. Also, these are funded by the people and for the people. It's our tax money. Not from someone's pocket.

Do not derail the thread by posting off topic nonsense for your 'agenda'.

Specifically an answer to your post as above is that laying a foundation stone does not necessarily mean the completion of a project. Credit has to be given to both the planner and the executor, and in this case, the executor is the Government of India & Government of Karnataka. (This is for your sarcastic query at #3 @Grevion). The Kochi Metro Rail Ltd is a Joint Venture Company of GoI & GoKerala. source: https://www.kochimetro.org/wp-content/uploads/2015/02/RFP_for_IaaS__KMRL.pdf)

@ashok321 The day you are able to discern the difference between the two aspects of any project execution namely planning & execution, you may perhaps, prove to be a valuable contributor to the thread, instead of what you just appeared as, a troll.

Cheers.

Planner Congress
Executor God's own country.

Both never claimed credit, but BJP came running to claim the credit?

We know these BJP braggers.
