The solution is simple. Divide Kerala into 5 States and all problems would be resolved. Congress, Communists and IUML can take a state each.

Kasargod and Kannur Districts

Zamorin State: IUML

Wayanad, Kozhikode and Malappuram Districts

Kochi State: CPIM

Palakkad & Thrissur Districts

Venad State: Congress

Ernakulam, Idukki & Kottayam Districts

Travancore State: CPIM

Alappuzha, Pathanamthitta, Kollam and Thiruvananthapuram Districts

Although it is the capital, Trivandrum is a small city with very good transportation system pre-existing. The UA is small and even places like Malappuram has a bigger UA and richer economy. I believe Kozhikode should get light metro project as it is an old city, the central of Malabar region. The richie rich are all in the Kochi-Kasaragode belt.

Kerala's capital should be Kochi, however during erstwhile princely state merge of Travancore and Cochin, the Travancore rajah bargained with union government to keep Trivandrum as the capital of Unified Kerala (Travancore, Cochin, Malabar) as a condition for merger, since he sensed that Trivandrum as a city is less strategic, surviving on government funds.

Trivandrum has a really bad transportation system. They depend on KSRTC and private buses. By that argument, Cochin had a far better system. Even ferries. Whats the use of the Metro there? Future expansion. Same argument is there for Trivandrum. To be exact, few malls and the new Technocity project is going to make it worse. You do know that by pure IT export, TVM is ahead of cochin. The recent wikipedia alteration story comes to mind.

Still even by market numbers, Trivandrum is second to Cochin in state. So stop selling them short.

Vizhinjam is definitely going to change all equations well.

A Highway would have facilitated greater inflow of tourists into the State. Chennai receives more foreign tourist than the whole of Kerala. CONGRESS AND COMMINISTS RULERS OF KERALA ARE THE REASONS FOR THE POOR INFRASTRUCTURE AND TOURISTS INFLOW INTO KERALA though Kerala is endowed with many natural beauty like Munar and water bodies and suitable for eco-tourism.
