The success of Kerala is not because of the communist. It's because of the previous Kingdom who ruled Travancore, the hard work of Migrants who got jobs during the Gulf boom, which greatly improved conditions of the Northern districts, then the Christian missionary funded schools down south.

The communists are one of the reason why Kerala is a consumer driven economy, which was primarily agrarian. Now Kerala depend on the grains, vegetables and fruits coming from other states. There are no industries. The one's there was forcibly moved out of the state, some even out of the country to Sri Lanka.
Also it's interesting that still the Majority of the roads constructed by the state government is much less compared to what constructed by the regent kings and central government.

The travel time and connectivity from Malabar and rest of Kerala to Trivandrum is bad. Above all, Trivandrum lobby is slowing Kochi based projects and working against Kochi's growth. Remember even there was online edit wars on Wikipedia pages as well as in urban discussion forums where Trivandrum fellows spread a lot of misinformation about Kochi. The most important point being, Kochi contributes 51% revenue of Kerala as taxes alone. Need to say anything more? It is like Rohtak made Indian capital while New Delhi should remain as just another city in India.

People outside of Kerala usually assumes that Kochi is the capital because of it's importance. Except Trivendrum no region is against Kochi as capital. Most probably, towards the east of Kakkanad, a new planned capital region may be established. This is what I can infer from the discussion I followed in social media.
PS: Trivandrum was forcefully made capital when negotiating accession of Travancore kingdom to Indian Union. The natural choice that time too was Cochin/Ernakulam/Kochi.
