Multi-billion dollar tender to purchase 126 Medium Multi-Role Combat Aircraft (MMRCA), for which Rafale was shortlisted in 2012, was withdrawn by the government of India and Confirmed by Defence minister Manohar Parrikar on the floor of the Upper House to the Countries Parliamentarians last week .

But as per new reports emerging in the media Government of India is planning to soon float a new tender to produce 90 Medium Multi-Role Combat Aircraft (MMRCA) in India with participation of Private aerospace companies in India .

Many defence analyst who spoke to idrw.org , belief that Request for Proposal (RFP) soon to be drafted and send to foreign bidders seems like a predetermined move and Ministry of defence and Defence minister Manohar Parrikar already might have shortlisted candidates since aircrafts which are likely will be offered to India like Russia’s MIG-35 (RAC MiG), Swedish Gripen, Dassault Rafale, American Lockheed Martin F-16 and Boeing’s F/A-18 Super Hornet and Eurofighter Typhoon made by a consortium of British, German, Spanish and Italian firms have already been tested by Indian air force and in great detail technical and performance deficit have been recorded .

Last time Request for Proposal (RFP) was deliberately not sent to Sukhoi Design Bureau which manufactures Sukhoi-30 series of fighter jets since IAF was Interested in acquiring Western designed Fighter jets then, It will be interesting to see if Sukhoi Design Bureau will be asked to submit a Proposal since Parrikar earlier was in favour of Purchasing additional Su-30 MKI aircrafts which are already produced in India and Russians earlier at Aero India 2015 had given detail briefing on Sukhoi-35 to Indian military planners and also had offered Indian customised Variant of Su-35 laced with 5th generation fighter aircraft technologies derived from Russia’s Pak-fa fighter jets which they argued will act as a bridge between Su-30MKI and Pak-FA fighters in Indian air force Inventory .

Defence analyst also have warned that “Saab India” which has been Camping in India ever since Gripen E/NG offered to India under MMRCA deal was rejected. over the years repeatedly have been offering lucrative deals and still might emerge dark horse since Swedes also have offered help in setting up a Joint production line for Tejas MK-II.

Germans too who are heading consortium for Eurofighter Typhoon have offered 20 % reduction in cost of jets to win back orders from India, Many Defence analyst believe long never ending delays which were witnessed under previous MMRCA tender might repeat if MOD is not careful enough in sending RFP only to selected few .

Utter utter nonsense on every level.

1) The MoD is already in the advanced stages of talks for 36 Rafales, why would they be looking to restart the MMRCA competition to induct ANOTHER type of fighter??
2) Why would Sukhoi get even if this MMRCA RFP was to be re-issued (which it won't)? Since when is the MKI a medium class fighter? The whole point of the MMRCA in the first place was to find an intermediate class fighter between the light LCA and heavy MKI. If the IAF/MoD wanted more MKIs they wouldn't need to issue a brand new RFP, they would simply add on to the order at HAL- as they have done numerous times now!

It is quite clear that the Rafale is coming to the IAF, once you accept that it is certain that more are going to be made in India-negating any need for a "MMRCA 2.0"- who would honestly believe such cr@p?

Anyone who is actually buying into this absurdity really are looking stupid.

Prasun Sengupta's take on the whole matter:

Trouble is the ‘desi’ journalists are an inept lot & can’t give any perspective. The RFP is for the selection of an Indian vendor or a consortium of vendors that will be selected for teaming up with Dassault Aviation for licence-building the 90 Rafales after the first 36 have already arrived from France

By FAR the most compelling and logical analysis of the current situation and to be fair to him he called this (Dassualt floating RFI/RFPs to Indian vendors to make Rafales in India) a few months ago.

Makes better sense .

But it was made clear that time only that this 36 jets have got nothing to do with mmrca.
What does one mean when one says "nothing to do with the MMRCA"? The fact that the GoI is continuing talks for the L1 bidder in the MMRCA shows there IS a link to the MMRCA and all the MoD is now doing is finding a way round the mess that the original MMRCA talks had become.

The end result will be the same- 126-200 Rafales in IAF service.

Haha. All the same things again and again and again.

And guess what what gona happens this time again. I am sure all these companies will again get a kick on their balls after wasting their time and resources.

No no man, you get it wrong.
Your defence minister has already made it clear that mmrca deal has been cancelled as india cant afford to spend 20 billion dollar just on mmrca.

So what made u think again they can afford 90 jets just 3 months after scraping the mmrca deal on financial grounds.
This is starting of yet another mother of all joke deal.

Leverage and showing France they can benefit from this deal if they cooperate in the final stages of the 36 fighters and if they do not see eye to eye in the deal now they can lose the 36 plane deal also to some other country.
