What's new

Will not order more , but OK with Export : IAF on Tejas Mk-1

Iaf statement.

They say- Tejas is far superior to mig 21

We will fly 40 year old russian mig21, but we will not buy Indian designed LCA .

One thing which PAF is 1000 times better than IAF is their love for local talent.

Look at how they were able to manage mirage 3 and j7 , and now jf17.

Our guys just destroyed 1000 cr c130j in a pilot error. Now they want a replacemwnt.

It is half of the cost of tejas engine programming .

Similarly , navy destroyed a front line sub worth 1500cr , but won't give a decent order for Indian private companies

yeh log mig 21 mein marna pasand karenge but tejas fly nahi karenge... shoshey baazi nothing much!!

Can't understand why people are gettin all worked up 40 is more than enough imo because MK2 is what IAF needs and MK1 is merely a stepping stone
make MK1 a trainer and stop buying branded trainers. That is the solution

hey man, that is outright stupid. you mean they killed themselves on purpose to get a new plane ?

indian navy on the other hand has always been encouraging local manufacturing. more so than IAF and IA.

Tejas exports are going to be difficult, in fact weapons exports in general by india is not that developed.

1. A large chunk of the aircraft is "foreign", engine is from the US, radar will contain israeli tech and then add to that european tech. All this will handicap the export potential for the tejas.
2. The tejas isnt as cheap as youd think, at least $26m each for the IAF. So for exports youd have to add to that development costs, support etc, the price will easily go north of $40m each and for that price your gonna get more bang for your buck from the chinese and russians.
3. The most important part though is that indian PSUs like HAL arent that experienced in the marketing department.

Too many more experienced competitor backed by their country aiming at same niche. Kai T-50 (backed by Korean government), JF-17/FC-1 (backed by Chinese), free 2'nd hand F-16 with some refurbish, and Gripen with their famous 'anything can be TOT' offer.

Does MK-2 has difference in structure than Mk-1. Otherwise mk1 can be upgraded to mk2 standard in future like our block1's.

Yeah it is structurally different. It is one meter longer and air intakes are also a little e.t.c. e.t.c.
MK2 will have AESA radar and a more powerful engine so mk1 will to be able to match mk2.

So mk1 is officially a failure.

So wrong, Pakistan, a 50/50 partner is inducting the Thunders in its active duty squadrons, has maintained that it is going to induct a minimum of 150 (9 squadrons) which may go up as high as 250 (16 squadrons). .
Fair enough but 9 squadrons you are counting are total of both bl1 and blk2,IAF will also induct mk2 in large numbers.
So mk1 is officially a failure.

You can say that as it didnt meet requirements cited by the IAF.Thats why mk2 is now being devloped. However the Tejas program was very important as it was needed for devloping a base reqired for devloping fighter jets.
