Will Mumbai finally surpass Shanghai this year?

Mumbai is not looking bad if you look at the highrises...but high rise blocks doesn't mean better town planning, better infra structure, more livable and lovable. Better public transport, water and utilities and many other things. Shanghai was developed after a proper master plan, have read it, all the cities in China has developed after a proper master plan is developed.

If you look at the most livable cities in world, like Vienna, Oslo, there is hardly any skyscraper of high rises, other cities like Adelaide and Melbourne are also most livable cities in the world and they have just a cluster or two of high rise, but the urban sprawl is big, with large open areas and gardens.

High rise doesn't mean better life...on the contrary it could be the opposite if they are mostly apartment blocks and not office blocks. It means less availability of land for urban sprawl...just like Mumbai facing the land crunch.

Mumbai looks more like Karachi...

Karachi newly developed Bahria Town, spread over 12,000 acres, a satellite town near Karachi.

Bombay's attraction is period buildings Art-Deco constructions. Bombay has immense potential which is kind of restricted because being politically not the capital of India as well as the step motherly treatment towards it's development from a country with capital as New Delhi. Move the capital to somewhere central, a new city like how Andhra state is creating Amaravati a new city as it's capital. The South India and central-Western India gets more justice and can be more heard if the capital moves off to a central land somewhere in the MP-Maharashtra region.

Karachi is also suffering from same treatment as you have written about Mumbai...and also just like Mumbai most of the development in new towns like Bahria town, DHA city is all due to private sector, private investment.

Karachi has immense potential, private entrepreneurship is the big plus point of Karachi, which is lacking in Islamabad and Lahore...

Even the current high rises of Mumbai seems to be just square concrete blocks and lacking modern glass cladding buildings.

Shanghai seems way ahead.

Mumbai airport looks amazing and seems to be designed with perfection. Read has been outsourced to some German company to run and maintain it just like Delhi IGI T2

Chances are that most of the apartment blocks in Mumbai will look like that as Mumbai has no Bungalows like Karachi and other cities...its all about apartments, condos, duplexes...office buildings looks more modern with glass cladding and better elevation...

Yes if you look at apartment complexes in Singapore or Toronto they are glass covered and with more open plans....some apartments like Bakht tower and some new apts. in Karachi has that design..

Karachi Bakth tower with big glass cladding and floor to ceiling windows...
