Union minister Nitin Gadkari’s public displeasure comes in the backdrop of the Navy declining permission for building a floating jetty at Malabar Hill in south Mumbai, where a floating hotel and seaplane service are planned.

Union minister Nitin Gadkari hit out at the Navy on Thursday, asking why all officials need to stay in posh South Mumbai, while criticising it for opposing the construction of a jetty at Nariman Point.

“Actually, Navy is needed at the borders from where terrorists sneak in. Why does everyone (in the Navy) want to stay in South Mumbai? They (Navy) had come to me, asking for a plot (of land). I will not give even an inch of land. Please don’t come to me again,” Gadkari said.

The minister’s public displeasure comes in the backdrop of the Navy declining permission for building a floating jetty at Malabar Hill in south Mumbai, where a floating hotel and seaplane service are planned.

The Bombay high court had refused permission to a private company for the construction of the jetty because it did not have the no-objection certificate (NoC) from the Western Naval Command.

As part of Gadkari’s plan to promote tourism, a private firm, Rashmi Development Private Limited, proposed to build a jetty to ferry its passengers to its five star floatel in the Arabian Sea.

“What has the Navy to do with Malabar Hill?...Everyone wants to build quarters and flats on south Mumbai’s prime land. We do respect you (Navy), but you should go to the Pakistan border and do patrolling,” said the minister at a function where he laid the foundation stone for an international cruise terminal at Mumbai Port Trust.

Gadkari said he chairs a committee for stalled infrastructure projects, adding that projects are cleared “as soon as they come on the agenda”.

“We are the government. The Navy and the defence ministry are not the government,” he said.

South Mumbai is home to a sizeable presence of the Navy and houses the headquarters of the Western Naval Command, as well as the naval residential quarters at Navy Nagar in Colaba in south Mumbai.

Overreacting maybe...But one hell of a reply.

When this world finishes the last man to die will probably be a Politician for he will have one last manipulation to do to favour someone to make money.

The Navy is right to refuse. Thus dolt is upset Coz whoever wanted to make a hotel must be his friend.

Needless to say his comprehension skills are poor too borne out his ludicrous suggestion of wanting the Navy to be near the ‘border’ !

Little realising that govts come & go. Services remain forever steadfast in their role & commitment

A fairly transparent and readily visible scam thwarted by security considerations. The Minister may rave and rant, but his friends are not getting their sea-plane jetty nor their floating hotel.

This is how this poisonous government is undermining institutions. So now the Navy must get on board:
  1. It is not the government;
  2. Its objections on the grounds of security are not appreciated; instead, they should vacate their infrastructure, built over more than a century, and allow these scams;
  3. Getting Modi to ride a sea-plane was not without significance.
Pakistanis should count themselves fortunate; their services are not pushed and pulled around by the pols.

Seaplanes....Lol.

We don't have enough runways for actual planes to land. Why do we need seaplanes ? Are there attols in bombay ?

No, but there is money in the pockets of Mr. Fadnavis' friends.

Bhaag yahaan se bhangi kahi kaa, Indian armed have numerous examples of how to end a government....well it will just take few destroyers aiming at our own Cities and few tanks near Delhi and government will come to it's knees....
If army, Navy and air Force protects you, it is their right to choose where they want to have their bases...
Bombay is an important city or the most important and vital target, navy will always have huge presence in Bombay....

Poor guy lost his commission.
Nonetheless, instead of ranting against navy he should take up the matter with Defense Minister.

Stop typing nonsensical replies.

Navy asked for land. He is the shipping minister and the land belongs to, tadaaa, port authority.

Puck stops at him.

Indian military falls under civilian democratic rule. Military answers to the government which the citizens elected.

While the way NG presented his comments is wrong, he is actually right.

The pace at which Indian aviation is growing, we are running out of reasonable airports.

If we also go on an airport rampage like China, it will take a toll on our environment.

Airport capacity at major cities is already full with places like Bengaluru and Mumbai overflowing to the boot.

To make new airports, one has to clear forest land and a lot of vegetation, in addition to displacing people.

Therefore, seaplanes are a cheaper alternative in the peninsular part of the country. Advent of seaplanes will reduce the peak time capacity burden at Mumbai airport as a lot of the adjoining area traffic will be catered to by seaplane jetties.

Gadkari could have spoken more politely but he is not wrong.

The defence has a lot of land which it doesn't need or use across India.
