Some American members here keep telling us that US is "crazy rich"

But I wonder how screen door installation can be that expensive, billions of dollars..., in China couples of million Yuan will be enough to cover them.

It's not just in North America. Let’s look at some subways in capital/major cities elsewhere:

Neither does the Moscow metro

Neither does the London tube

Neither does the Rome metro

Neither does the Madrid subway

Neither does the Berlin subway

Neither does the Athens subway

I can post a long list of the cities which have them, you should learn from the better or from the worse? especially for some country which claims to be the richest in the world.

The thread name is making it look like North America is some specific standout when it comes to platform doors.

That is obviously incorrect. If anything it is probably far more likely that the number of countries around the world that lack platform doors exceeds the number of countries whose systems always use them.

I'm not against platform doors. In fact I think they should be retro-fitted inside US subways systems as they are a good idea.

Singapore pioneered the platform door in 1987. It is a relatively recent idea...and that was to save air-conditioning costs not due to safety concerns.

You can see later in the video when they are outside that there are no platform doors.

This is why I say US GDP is total BS, for something as cheap as installing screen doors can cost billions of dollars, what a life could be for the average people.

Many Stations were built with the cut and cover method. So supporting columns and curving stations make install Platform doors hard to do in many stations while maintaining mobility on the platforms.

Retrofitting stations for a service used by a limited number of people, while there are other more critics maintenance issues to fix, means this is a luxury not a necessity.

If retrofitting is too closely (which is not cause several Beijing subways lines from the 1960's retrofitted screen doors with great ease), why they didn't install the screen doors in newly built subways either?

North American culture doesn't allow babysitting of citizens. Citizens are allowed to hold guns, parents throw their kids out when they are 18, and people are expected to have basic mental awareness abd be strong, so no pussy *** railings are required. Perhaps only Chinese people are retarded enough that they need a glass screen to prevent them falling on the subway . Whats next, Chinese govt should also install tampon vending machines at all stations so all their men can get free access.

Probably uniformity. Having some stations with the panels and others without would mean coordinating alignment of where the train. The JFK sky train has the panels though, but it is an automated system.

You missed Sydney

And I am pretty sure why they don't install platform screen in those underground station is because of a safety issue, if the Platform have a fire like King's Cross Station, passengers need to be able to access the track to escape and survive, putting a screen door may trigger a bottleneck or even block passengers escape in case of a station fire.
