Why Are We Sending This Attack Helicopter to Pakistan?

A disgrace for Pakistan that this traitor once walked on its soil. If this guy who was born here, raised here and then sent as our ambassador can so easily speak against Pakistan. I wonder how low he can get if gets a chance to do something against USA a country that isn't his?

With nuclear weapons, Pakistan no longer has any reason to feel insecure about being overrun by a larger Indian conventional force. For the U.S. to continue supplying a Pakistani military that is much larger than the country can afford will only invigorate Pakistani militancy and militarism at the expense of its 200 million people, one-third of whom continue to live at less than a dollar a day per household.

Mr. Haqqani, the director for South and Central Asia at the Hudson Institute in Washington, D.C., was Pakistan’s ambassador to the U.S., 2008-11.

Hi,

The onslaught of isis has back fired on the planning of the US in the middle east. It literally has been baffled and confused at the direction the things have taken. A massive monkey wrench has been thrown into the moving gears and the U S got caught flat footed.

As the myth of the Iraqi troops trained by the American forces got busted in a panic defeat and abandonment of weapons and posts---the American military was as shell shocked at what was happening as those Iraqis who ran away from their posts.

As isis spread like wild fire---death and brutality seen like never before for ages---recent U S conquests coming under the influence of isis----and Mr Barak Hussein Obama staring at the issues in a hypnotic confusion.

Isis welcomed with open arms all the conquered states of the united states in the middle east and Afghanistan. The humiliation of Iraq falling to isis was a terrible happening----but if Afghanistan fell into the hands of isis---that would be devastation---a humiliation likes of it not suffered by the American forces ever.

On the other side---as pakistan changed gears and decided to say good bye to the americans and to look for other pastures---in a last ditch effort---the americans threw in the sales of the gunships and the hellfire missiles-----a surprise to the Pakistani military organization---as they had considered this a dead issue.

The thing over here is---that the steam that Hussein Haqqani is blowing about the sale of these helicopters and missiles----what would happen if Pakistan did not get these----. Nothing---nada---zilch---zero--.

Pakistan has gunships available thru other sources that can do the job against the terrorists as well as any American choppers.

Yesterday Barak Obama has lost a great ally in Pakistan to china----.

In the end---what did the U S get by bashing Pakistan about the Osama Bin Laden affair----nothing---nada---zilch---only an egg on the face of the U S.

The Osama bashing of Pakistan was the ultimate STUPID MOMENT in the history of foreign affairs by the govt of the united states of America. It served no purpose---the U S gained nothing out of it---other than that Pakistan has moved away from it and its sphere of influence.

If the U S can claim one thing---if it can claim one credit of Osama bashing---what it gained----and there is none. The U S govt is desperately trying to get back with Pakistan by releasing conciliatory statements that Pakistan govt / military was not involved in giving refuge to Osama---but all is lost for the time being.

With more weapons---the militancy will be smashed in due time until Mr Haqqani decides to arm the militants with better weapons.

I did not get to notice that post of yours else I would have reported. Pissing you off or not, you simply cant use this kind of language on a public forum. Please delete that post.

I am taking the negative rating back from the post which was made in response to your post. However, I would appreciate to see both the derogatory posts gone. Thanks.

Hi,

I agree somewhat with what you are saying---but the U S cannot influence Pakistan as it did before. Pak military would prefer U S weapon systems over others---. The ultimate control has been lost---that was stupid---totally totally brainless.

The U S should have thought beforehand---what would it gain by bashing Pakistan over Osama issue---what would it get out of it----what were the gains---nothing---nothing---nothing---and the only thing that comes out is that---Barak Obama had many other problems and he wanted to divert the nations attention for his personal gains.

Other than that---name one thing that the world has been able to do to Pakistan.

Well, US's carrot and stick policy is pretty much in place for as long as I remember. You may be able to see something that I cannot, for me things are not much different then they used to be. They killed our troops in Salala check post incident and conveniently got away with it, and then the Osama fiasco. Na aasmaan toota na zameen phati. Raheel Shareef saheb Amrica mein do haftey bhi guzaar aye.

The nearly one billion dollar worth of attack helicopters, missiles and other defense equipment being sold to Pakistan by the US will end up being used in the fight against India instead of being deployed against jihadists, according to a former Pakistani diplomat.

Pakistan's former Ambassador to the US Hussain Haqqani said the Obama administration's decision to sell US-made attack helicopters, missiles and other equipment to Pakistan will "fuel conflict in South Asia without fulfilling the objective of helping the country fight Islamist extremists."

"Pakistan's failure to tackle its jihadist challenge is not the result of a lack of arms but reflects an absence of will. Unless Pakistan changes its worldview, American weapons will end up being used to fight or menace India and perceived domestic enemies instead of being deployed against jihadists," Mr Haqqani wrote in the Wall Street Journal in the piece titled 'Why Are We Sending This Attack Helicopter to Pakistan'.

He said that given Pakistan's "past behavior", it is "likely" that the 15 AH-1Z Viper helicopters and 1,000 Hellfire missiles as well as communications and training equipment will be used against secular insurgents in southwest Balochistan province and along the disputed border in Kashmir rather than against the jihadists in the northwest.

"Competition with India remains the overriding consideration in Pakistan's foreign and domestic policies. By aiding Pakistan over the years-some 40 billion dollars since 1950, the US has fed Pakistan's delusion of being India's regional military equal. Seeking security against a much larger neighbor is a rational objective but seeking parity with it on a constant basis is not," he said.

Mr Haqqani said that instead of selling more military equipment to Pakistan, US officials should convince Islamabad that its ambitions of rivaling India are "akin to Belgium trying to rival France or Germany."

Drawing a comparison between the two South Asian nuclear- armed rivals, Mr Haqqani said India's population is six times as large as Pakistan's while India's economy is 10 times bigger, with India's 2 trillion dollars economy managing consistent growth whereas Pakistan's 245 billion dollars economy growing sporadically and undermined by jihadist terrorism.

He said Pakistan continues to depend on Islamist ideology - through its school curricula, propaganda and Islamic legislation - to maintain internal nationalist cohesion, which inevitably encourages extremism and religious intolerance.

Mr Haqqani recalled that between 1950 and 1969, the US gave 4.5 billion dollars in aid to Pakistan partly in the hope of using Pakistani troops in anti-communist wars, but Pakistan did not contribute a single soldier for the wars in Korea or Vietnam but went to war with India over Kashmir in 1965.

Again during the 1980s, Pakistan "diverted" the US aid toward its "obsessive rivalry" with India.

Mr Haqqani said even after the December attack on a Peshawar school where the Taliban killed 160 people, including many schoolchildren, the "destruction, demobilisation, disarmament or dismantling" of Afghan Taliban and other radical groups is "clearly not on the Pakistani state's agenda."

Not only Osama bashing, but there were other incidents too. Raymond Davis, Boulder check post attack, accusations against ISI.
Historically, Pakistan has always had better relations with Republicans. George Bush designated Pakistan a "Major Non Nato Ally" adding Pakistan to a list of countries that include staunch allies like Japan and Israel. But Obama came and decided to turn everything on its head.
I think USA and Pakistan can still salvage their relations, and things do seem to be getting better with both nations trusting each other more.

Because the PAF really needed F-16 Blk.52s to take out men living in caves and carrying small arms.
