Amdavadis, get set for a thrilling year-end as the Sardar Patel Gujarat Stadium Motera will be hosting Pakistan cricket team in a T-20 International, likely to be played in December.
After hosting England for a tour match followed by the first Test of the four-match bilateral series in mid-November, the Motera stadium will see an action-packed T20 international between the arch-rivals Indian and Pakistan in one of two T20 Internationals.
His speeches against Mian Musharraf and the Pakistan-based terrorist organisations helped Narendra Modi retain the chief ministership in the 2007 Gujarat assembly elections.
However, with Pakistan cricket team scheduled to play a T20 International at Motera, it will be interesting to see which issues the ruling party will now raise during their campaign for the assembly polls scheduled for November-December.
The coming five months are going to be crucial for the CM. Modi, who is tipped to lead NDA in 2014 elections, will have to play his shots well and prove his prowess not only in assembly elections but also on the cricketing front and this includes the CBCA and GCA elections due in September.
It will be a tough task for the CM as he will have to ensure hassle-free days when Ahmedabad hosts the England and Pakistan teams in two different series.
It is to be recalled that one of the conspirators of the Mumbai attack Abu Jundal, who is in police custody, has admitted to have planned to target Modi with the backing of Pakistan spy agency ISI.
India and Pakistan have agreed to play three One-Day Internationals and two Twenty20 Internationals during the Christmas break.
The One-Dayers will be played in New Delhi, Kolkata and Chennai while Bangalore and Ahmedabad will host the two T20 matches.
As per rotation policy, we were expecting a bilateral series match against Australia in early 2013. But this new development has resulted in an India-Pak match being allotted to us. We are more than happy to host the T20 match, said Dhiraj Jogani, treasurer Gujarat Cricket Association (GCA).
This will be third Indo-Pak encounter at this venue. First time the two teams locked horns was in a historic Test match in 1987. It was a match where Sunil Gavaskar completed his 10000th Test run, becoming the first batsman in the history to cross that landmark.
Last time, when the two countries faced each other at Motera, was in April 2005. Thematch went down to wire, with the visitors scoring the winning runs of the last ball. It was one of those matches, when master blaster Sachin Tendulkars (129) century went in vain. India notched up 315, but the Inzimam-ul-Haq-led side chased down the set target with three wickets to spare. In fact, Inzimam (60*) was named man of the match for guiding Pakistan to a memorable win.
For the last five years, India and Pakistan have played each other only in multi-team series. Both team last met on Indian soil during the semifinal of ICC Cricket World Cup 2011 at Mohali where India defeated Pakistan and eventually went on to lift the trophy.
