WHO says it 'regrets' US decision to halt the funding

Please go ahead. While you are at it, also get out of UN altogether and make your own UN with "like minded" nations.

Not sure if next UN generally assembly session is now possible in America with current apocalyptic situation in New York anyway. Mother nature is making UN irrelevant for uncle sam it seems.

You very conveniently ignored 1.5 trillions you smoked on Afghanistan though.

don’t worry China will fund WHO and the U.N. . China will forgive all debt. China is rich..

reviewing the impact on its work from the withdrawal of US funding" and would work with its partners to fill the gaps left by the defunding to ensure that its work continued uninterrupted.

In other words, here is the middle finger to America and its cheerleaders like India and its internet troll army.
WHO'declared January that COVID doen not have human to human transmission ability, in spite of Taiwan's information of confirmed cases of human to human transmission, which they send to WHO on 31st December, 2019. Who will take the responsibility of their such irresponsible act? The director of WHO, who once was health minister of Ethiopia, has a track record of suppressing cholera epidemics in his own country when he was holding the portfolio.

well ,let tell you a secret , in 2017 when they selected the new Director the ones who supported Dr. Tedros were the big donnors who provide 2/3rd of Who 2.2billion budget , do you knew who are these big donnors ?
let me tell you. large donors, including the United States, Britain, the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation, Rotary International and Norway.

Then giving them money is useless if they can do nothing but twiddle thumbs..
Agree, no need to fund a useless organization that made the pandemic situation worse instead of improving it by giving false sense of security to the world.
I on my part completely lost my trust in WHO.

Yet WHO made suggestions and gave advises that lead to the spread of the virus even thought Taiwan presented proof of human to human transmission to it yet it got ignored.
You buy everything US fed you. Taiwan never warned WHO. We have solid proof about that.

World Health Organisation (WHO) Director General Dr Tedros Adhanom on Wednesday said that the world health body "regretted" US President Donald Trump's decision to withdraw funding from it.

Trump on Tuesday halted funding to the WHO over its handling of the coronavirus pandemic, drawing condemnation from infectious diseases experts as the global death toll continued to mount.

The decision came after allegations by Trump that the WHO was "China-centric". In a White House news briefing on Tuesday, he claimed that the Geneva-based organisation had promoted China's "disinformation" about the virus that likely led to a wider outbreak than would have occurred otherwise.

"The WHO failed in this basic duty and must be held accountable," Trump added.

Speaking at a news conference, the WHO chief responded by saying that the body did not discriminate and stressed that it is a "time for all of us to be united in our common struggle against a common threat".

He assured critics that the UN's health body was "committed to serving the world’s people, and to accountability for the resources with which we are entrusted".

Talking about the accountability process, Adhanom said: "In due course, WHO’s performance in tackling the Covid-19 pandemic will be reviewed by WHO’s member states and the independent bodies that are in place to ensure transparency and accountability. This is part of the usual process put in place by our member states."

Expressing gratitude to the nations, organisations and individuals who had provided financial support to the WHO, he said the body was "reviewing the impact on its work from the withdrawal of US funding" and would work with its partners to fill the gaps left by the defunding to ensure that its work continued uninterrupted.

There has been strong criticism of Trump's decision, with UN Secretary General Antonio Guterres saying it is "not the time” to reduce resources for WHO's operations.

“Now is the time for unity and for the international community to work together in solidarity to stop this virus and its shattering consequences,” he added.

There are problems with WHO yes, but halting it right now is a pretty dumb decision. A lot of countries failed to respond right. US was one of them, blaming it all on WHO is pretty dumb.

The WHO is also responsible for the spread of the virus by not demanding an independent research of the pandemic and trusting the words of a regime thats known for twisting facts.
They can ask China for funding in the future.

This was January, whole month after first confirmed cases:

WHO downplaying the pandemic by trusting Chinese goverments claims has cost lives, they should have done own research, it must have a consequence.

Except these tweets don't fully validate your claim. Preliminary investigations do not mean definitive. As more information became available they updated information. This was a new virus and this discovery was declared in the beginning of January. Don't get me wrong though, WHO's response was a week too late and the statement on travel bans wasn't advisable. But the claim of a month late is something else.

This is pathetic. China, Japan, Gulf Arab nations, the EU and other large economies like Canada, Australia, Russia, India, Brazil etc should step in and cover the gap. At a time where we need the WHO more than ever, Trump is playing politics with it.

There should be an enquiry into mistakes made etc, once we are through the other side of this, but right now we need a global focal point to coordinate a global effort to fight this pandemic.

Well, can anyone provide the countrywise donation list of WHO? Thanks in advance.
