By fighting for India's true values, he has created a new possibility - that India can be won back from the cocky, rabid stormtroopers of the Right.

A piece by Pritish Nandy in the Pune Mirror today.

My personal view is that the "pappu" jokes on Whatsapp have magically stopped.

Everyone loves an underdog.

And Modi and the BJP have severely underestimated the public's power and need to punish.

When they get to.

Cheers, Doc

I have 3 criticizms of Modi -
1. Poorly implemented demonetization. For reducing black money why introduce 2000 rs notes. And why small demo notes quantity was not increased before implementation. But 1st hand experience of selling a flat in 2018, potential buyers would make sure that I didn't expect any payment in black All wanted to pay full amt by cheque. What a change.

As someone who got dragged into implementation of the said phase, let me just address the bold.

The process of printing of the currency notes was primarily undertaken at the BRBNMPL, Mysuru (producing more than 90% of currency notes in the run up to stabilization of situation). The intent behind Rs2000/- currency note production was due to requirement to have cash available for payment on 1st Dec 2016 in the largely 'unorganized' sector of the Indian Economy, which was bereft of Accounts and other means of payment. By producing smaller denomination notes, it would not have been possible to meet that requirement. Prior printing would have been akin to 'showing' the hand.

Further, let me also clarify that at no point was there a dearth of currency notes. We had three shifts of Indian Army troops working embedded round the clock, providing close in protection and ensuring high productivity, each shift of 8 hours, working 24 hours a day. Trains were being loaded and C17s/C130s were used to airlift from Mysuru airfield too.

The biggest challenge which came to fore on 01 Dec 2016, was not cash shortage, but the systematic corruption that ensured that the large stockpile at various bank head branches, was not loaded at the ATMs or distributed to satellite centres as corrupt officials of banking systems had to have substantial cash to 'exchange' the large cash of poor "wealthy" people. In fact, in Hyderabad itself, a person had declared Rs 10,000 Crores as Black Money prior to the crackdown. I am sure we can safely speculate why.

In J&K and other disturbed areas, there was a fall in the number of incidents of violence, which was, as per intelligence reports, direct consequence of lack of money being available.

3. Didn't use the stick enough. Ppl everywhere, except maybe Japan, require a bit of fear to follow rules. Even the clean India initiative could have done wonders if some penalties were introduced.

Stick needs to start with you and I taking the initiative of using it on ourselves first and foremost - aka self discipline. The question is of a society that remains too selfish and self centered. A rather tall order.

Let me just illustrate an example - we have a tremendous problem of traffic management and (not) following of traffic rules. Law being a state subject, the Governments at State levels can simply ask the Traffic Cops to enforce the rules as they stand. To do that, they can pay the cops better to obviate corruption. Subsequently, merely enforcing the law, will mobilize enough funds for improvement of road infrastructure within city limits itself. I am very sure that Modi can not do anything in that.

4. Didn't address the saffron loonies. He was voted in for economic change not to be a Hindu leader.

Unfortunately, the base is Hindu loonies and to get power, he had to bank on them. But also important to note is that he is pragmatic enough to have quietly let Article 370 issue die. With Supreme Court declaring it as unvoidable in its April 2018 judgement, that is off the mainstream media and likely will find a footnote mention if at all in manifesto for 2019. Why did he not push for an amendment in Parliament? Because, unlike the popular misconception of our Khakhee brigade (heck @Joe Shearer considers me an honorary member of the same ;)), even Hindus of J&K oppose any move to remove Article 370, for obvious reasons.

With the SC judgement basing time as reason for dismissing the plea against Article 370, the same rationale will be allowed in case of Article 35 (A), and the plea dismissed.

Ayodhya - I expect the Judgement of Allahabad High Court to be upheld, in all honest assessment.

@hellfire

No, not really. I think you are soft on the khaki chaddis, judging by what I saw in the other place, without being one yourself. They just let the Sanghis run riot, and you were not able to kick them into shape. I don't think you are a Sanghi yourself, just one of those who has not thought through the rule of law, how to maintain it, what endangers it, its greatest threat, the role of religion, the failure of the politician, the failure of the armed forces.....

So we are condemned to inexperienced leaders who will hopefully learn on the job. Meanwhile their mistakes and ineffectiveness effect millions. Manmohan being a prime example.
And its demoralising since India has so many competent people but never in power.
