What is a British Muslim? Is there such a thing as that? What can we make of their thinking?
My thinking is that a British Muslim is a person whose ethnic origin is from the British isles - English, Welsh, Scots or Irish who has reverted/converted to Islam. Thus British Muslim. Rest are just fake wannabes. Thoughts?

Ah, Young Pak,

Why not ask the fundamental question... What is it that makes someone British???

Perhaps that might create a contextual underpinning for the broader answers that you seek.

Well, there are many definitions. First could be those whose ethnic origin is from the British isles and who reside there. Second could be those who hold the legal and secular definition of having citizenship of Britain by virtue of birth or naturalisation but may not have ethnic roots to these isles.

Just like we are called "American Muslims". Well, I think it's not about converting to Islam being a British to be called "British Muslim". It usually refers to a Muslim living in a non Muslim majority countries. Canadian Muslims, Australian Muslims, American Muslims and British Muslims.

I know what you mean but think about this. Canadian, British, Pakistani etc are secular legal definitions. What I can't understand is if a Pakistani migrant (or his offspring) can dump their secular or ethnic descriptor for religious one - Going from British-Pakistani to British-Muslim or American-Pakistani to American Muslim why do they retain the 'British' or 'American' tag for? Iff they are so into religious identity that it supercedes their ethnic identity then why hold on to the new secular identity markers?

I would agree with you. Blood is important.

Which is why I question this whole "British-Muslim" thing that is so rampant these days. I mean if you can so easily dump your ethnic national identity then what goves holding on to the newly acquired British tag.

Is there something sinister behind it?

Pakistani identity secular??

Since when?

Is there something sinister behind it?
Pleasing British authorities I guess.

Pakistani identity secular?
Yes it is. Pakistan is a secular, legal and national contruct consistent with the Westphalian conception of nation state. Therefore it is secular. If it was derived from Islamic law then it's concept would align around the ummah notion and as a state it would be for any Muslim from anywhere. The only thing you would need to declare at immigration desk is your Muslim and you would be let in. As things stand a Sikh from Hasan Abdal is Pakistani citizen and allowed in with his passport on the other hand a Morroccan Muslim or Black Muslim is not allowed entry just because they are Muslim.

Pleasing British authorities I guess.
Very true.

Anyone born in Britain is, by definition, British. It has nothing to do with ethnicity etc. Just look at their passports. A british Muslim means someone who was born and bred in Britain but beleives in the Islamic faith. I dont know why you are getting so worked up about it.

No matter what it literally means, British muslim, or for that matter american muslim or any xyz country muslim is a racist term now. See how people from other countries are called - British canadian, australian-american etc. Being called british muslim, is seggregating someone on the basis of their religious belief, which does not get well with the native religion (to put it mildly). British-pakistani, for example should be the right word.

According to Ofsted, 'fundamental British values' are:
- Democracy
- The rule of Law
- Individual Liberty
- Mutual respect and tolerance of those with different faiths and beliefs and for those without faith.

In short, British Muslim is residence within Britain (born/carrying British passport) and practices their Faith/from that Faith. The belonging of the Individual to a Country in addition with their Faith.

For e.g. A Pakistani Hindu = a person of Pakistan belonging to a Hindu Faith.

Faith isn't limited to any Country.

There's no such thing as British ethnicity. Being British is a nationality, an ethnicity would be English, Scottish, or Welsh.
