That's your own experience, I have no idea, our experience says that we got economic boom in last 20 years because we disowned socialism and not because of any dictators or military general.
Mujib was never truly interested in a Democracy. He set up a one-party state by eliminating all political parties and media outlets. All the banks and whatever was left of what was known as East Pakistan were looted. No other country has received as much international aid as Bangladesh. And yet what happened to that aid? The man systematically screwed around that very people who fought for him. And people still wonder why he along with most of his family were gunned down.
People seriously need to get rid of this delusion that the Awami League is for a strong Democracy. It is a mafia party at best, with little or no principles.
Let me ask you something, China is a one party state (Communist) with a free-market economy. And yet, it is growing, is it not?
Russia is a mafia state, and yet has the least amount of debts.
Hell, even Pakistan did pretty well back in the 80s. Add that to the GCC states, not a single one of them is Democratic, but ruled by barons. And yet, they are rich are they not? Far more than any of us.
Even Singapore, which is not at all a Democracy, and yet the people are all happy and hip. Every Asian would envy those Singaporeans.
The point is that just because a country is a Democracy, does not mean it'll automatically become prosperous. Elections are only part of a Democracy. One thing about one party states and dictators is that things get done quickly.
Democracy in my opinion doesn't work in the true sense. Look at the US for example. They are a strong Democracy while at the same time they have to keep state secrets. And as a superpower, it becomes very necessary. See, the more Democratic minded a nation's people become, the more it becomes necessary to keep secrets. And sometimes, those practices may not be Democratic at all. Albeit, downright criminal. Why do you think the boys at the Pentagon were all hysterical over Wikileaks? It is because of that reason.
The only part of the world I can say has truly implemented Democracy are the Scandinavian countries and Japan. Did you know that Norway implements a Socialist model? And yet they are Democratic.
As far as my country is concerned, I believe the correct form of government is to have a one-party state lead by Technocrats and responsible Capitalists. No, not military rule.
The country is not yet ready for Democracy such that it'd lead to development on all fronts. Democracy and freedom is not equal to doing whatever crap one wants to do.
And yet we have the almighty Uncle Sam giving us the '3 Ds' - Democracy, Development, and Denial to Terrorism. What a bunch of hypocrites
In fact, it is rather contradictory. But then, they do partly control our military.
I hope Dr. Yunus and fine sirs like him can lead the nation to the future. And La-Hasina given a bloody nose. Hell, she should be in a mental hospital somewhere in India
