i have to admit i'm not good at india history nor its political system. i will be more than happy to listen if someone can enlighten me on something i don't quite understand. for example, based on what merit that brought Sonia to chair congress overnight after the assassination of her husband PM Rajiv?(well i'm not even sure if Sonia took over the power immedicately or wait some kind of graceful period?)

I have just been told to get lost, very politely, but very firmly, by Brotherhood, so let us pretend that my quick response to you is part of the process of withdrawal - a word in parting as I walk off, as it were.

  1. As you have guessed correctly, Sonia Gandhi did not get any political position on her husband's assassination.
  2. Instead, P. V. Narasimha Rao, a very talented politician, with numerous assignments to his credit, and a polyglot with six languages, was appointed Prime Minister. His term was mixed; on the one hand, he opened up the economy, using a brilliant economist for the purpose, in the capacity of a Finance Minister, one Manmohan Singh; unfortunately, he also took a very bad decision of trusting the Chief Minister of UP, who belonged to a hostile party, and allowed the destruction of a mosque which had enormous repercussions on Indian politics.
  3. The gradual erosion of the Congress Party's leadership led to faction fighting within the party. Several strong leaders ganged up on the Party President, an apparatchik of no significance, and it looked as if the party was headed for doom.
  4. Several faction leaders then contacted Sonia Gandhi, then leading a completely private life, and persuaded her to join politics. She became a primary member of the party, with no political rank, and sat through nearly a year more of gradual deterioration of the fortunes of the Congress.
  5. The Congress finally came together to appoint her Party President in 1999, 8 years after Rajiv Gandhi's assassination (1991) and three Prime Ministers, one from the Congress and two from its opposition (more or less) later.
  6. When she did lead the Congress to decisive victory, she was astute enough to avoid the obvious, refused Prime Ministership, and appointed Manmohan Singh the PM.
  7. Sonia's initial importance, as was Rajiv's before her, and Indira Gandhi's even earlier, was that the Congress could rally around a figurehead, and the strong state leaders could work under a leader who was not strong in their own states, thus leaving them to nurse their own constituency in peace.

There'll be others to help as well, and it is good to see that some others have already responded.

imho...we need better moderation of such sensitive threads...
they go up in flames in no time...and people who actually want to add value can not do anything...
The Chinese member who started this thread might be expecting a better discussion...but it all goes haywire in no time and then the mods have to put a lock on such and such...

thank you very much for your in-depth explaination. my knowledge on india polital system is 'way better' than before your post.

Fair point.

Qin Shi Huang was a bit ruthless I suppose, so maybe the name "China" (derived from Qin) isn't well suited for the purpose.

Contrary to popular belief, China does not come from Qin but from Chang an.

Zhong guo is a good name. We should get Lao wai to use it as well.

How about Tian Xia ?

People here are confusing messy democracy practice to the fact that democracy isn't helping India.

Our system isn't efficient so far because there never came a situation where our democracy was threatened by dictatorship or some foreign ideology .

One important fact to note:Efficient practice of democracy in the west is product of economic development.

Same applies for India.

India has many talented people. Why out of a billion talented Indians, you guys chose an Italian lady?

A Chinese member opened a thread in order to discuss what China can learn from Indian mode. But like always, some Indian member spoiled the thread by patronizing us.

We hate to be condescended to by people, especially by people who is behind us in most fileds as of now. And we also hate to lecture others on what they should do, because we know it is annoying.

A decent discussion is based on mutual respect.

We will be nice to people who is nice to us, but we also can be mean to people who is mean to us.

Are you reading the same thread as me?? what part of this thread looks like a page for discussion?? to me it sounds as if this was put here to humilate & bash india.
when you put a toppic for discussion you have to put both the sides of the coin.. positive & negetive. let the people decide which way they want incline. above thread has nothing to do with democracy. democracy has lot of merits & demerits.
thread points towards the corruption coming out from the political class.
this happens in any kind of regime. wether it's democracy, communisom, dictatorship or socialism. It's just that when it happens in democracy it smacks right in your face.. whereas when it happens under other systmes of administration its brushed under carpet, 'cause you can afford to do so.
so please spare me that thought of 'we are superior to you in every which way' c$&p!!

the tree of democracy dont gve fruits too early.we will have to wait till tree grows properly.and other thing is that ,it takes time to grow may be more time than usual.but its fruit is best among the very best.

indian democracy tree hasn't grown properly till now.so we hope it will be better in future from present.

Dynasty politics!

In this case its the Gandhi tag

in singapore case, lee tag didn't work well. it caused a big blow to old lee's reputation. young generation has little respect... i don't deny little lee is a great leader too, he is working so hard for the country but people just dont see that way. whenever he did a great job people just take it as granted but whenever he did not so well people start criticising him heavily accusing him should not on the post at the first place if not his father...

it's not swept under the carpet here. chinese media reports alot of negative news about itself. see the "China negative news" thread for alot of examples. the difference between india and china: when corrupt officials get caught in china, they're given jail terms. when corrupt officials get caught in india, they're given reelection.
