What do Urdu Speakers Want?

Ok, so I just had a long talk with an Urdu speaking friend of mine and he said he loves Pakistan and is a Pakistani first but wants a confederation between Pakistan and India. He said he still has relatives in India and considers India his homeland just as Pakistan is his homeland.

I also have many Urdu speaking friends who dont want anything to do with India and are happy being Pakistanis and would do anything for Pakistan.

So I'm confused to hear so many different views from Urdu speakers.

So I would like to hear from Urdu Speakers in this forum, what do they want?

Are you happy being Pakistanis instead of Indians?
Are you happy that your parents/grandparents left India for Pakistan?
What kind of relationship do you want Pakistan and India to have in the future?

I also saw this interview which I found very intersting.
yY40sosTtzk[/media] - Hina Khwaja interviews those who left India for Pakistan during Partition

P.S. I wont judge anyone just be honest in what you want for yourselves and Pakistan. Thank you.
It will be a cold day in hell before I vote for any such confederation.

I often hear of such stories being fed into the mouths of so-called urdu speakers, yet I'm still to run into anyone who clearly believes in any such ideology, barring some crazy commentary from Altaf Hussein, and he really doesn't speak for Urdu.

I know they are Pakistanis, but we also have a thread here of "what do SINDHIS want" thats a sticky.

I hear many views from different ethnic groups. Urdu speakers are also an ethnic group and curious to hear their thoughts.

If theres anything Urdu speakers want is for all the other provinces to quit their bickering, grow up and serve Pakistan. If anything you'll find die hard patriots amongst those who migrated from India.

Because of people like altaf our people got their rights
Back in 1970's people used to think as we were martians or something and many urdu speaking people were unable to get jobs even if they were well qualified

Well I think you should speak for yourself rather than your people. Altaf is a shame upon us, he is the one who called the formation of Pakistan a mistake when he went to INDIA. Because of him we're looked upon suspiciously.

My father has worked with top brainiacs of Pakistan and he started his career in the 60s in Karachi. I think the problem is the other way round since we were and probably still are the most educated group in Pakistan (now thats just a guess from pure observation and nothing else), so we got all the jobs and left the well dry for the locals.

This is a classic complaint of people anywhere in the world. But decades later, I think no one really carries this beef any more.

What I hate is that my cousins saying that they are being treated not at par with the rest of Pakistan like Punjab or Sindh. They are more proud of being a Puthan then a Pakistani. They say we are Puthan first and then Pakistani which kinda makes me sad. Swat before the Taliban had everything like fast DSL internet, Sui Gas, Electricity, Government Schools, Colleges, Hospitals, Mobile Reception, Phone, Tourist Industry etcetra but they still say that they are not given what the Punjabis/Sindhis have, I don't know what they mean but I think that this is a real threat to the solidarity of Pakistan.
As a Pakistani I stand United with my Nation. I am a Muslim then a Pakistani. I am not a Puthan, Kashmiri, Sindhi or Balochi. I AM A PAKISTANI

ok my friend who started referring to you as MOHAJIR or URDU SPEAKING....this thing didn't exsist till you formed MQM...a.k.a MOHAJIR QAUMI MOVEMENT!!! you gave yourself a name and then said don't call us that....
Seriously, Altaf is not our representative. What because Karachi is always elected as MQM thats why you think all of us are in bed with him?

#1 Elections in Karachi are a sham. My cousin wanted to vote for PML-N in the last elections. She went to the polling booth, got the ink and everything and then they told her "Bibi ji ghar jayein, apka vote hogaya". They voted FOR her. Thats why in Karachi you have results like the winner getting 140,000 votes and the runner up with 10,000 votes.

#2 You know those speeches of Altaf that are broadcasted with hundreds of thousands listening to him? What they don't tell you is that they round people up in trucks and force them to come attend an Altaf speech...

2 - We want not to be sidelined from the nation's fate and be given a fair chance in jobs. Nowadays it is quasi impossible for one of us to get a job with the state, or to get a promotion if you do have the job. I think the problem might lie with the baraadari and qabiila connections that are essential in this society to take you through, which we lack.

like i said brother LIAQUAT ALI KHAN,FATIMA SURIYA BHAJIYA,JAVED MIADAD & MUSHRAAF....where is the side lining of URDU SPEAKING people.... and on top of it all you have your language as the national language....HELL I should feel sidelined now!!!

I personally am quite satisfied with our progress and I don't agree with the sidelining notion. Except when such threads are made and ridiculous words are fed into our mouths.

3 - We especially wish to be considered equal citizens in Sindh. Do you really think we can't see through how quotas in allocation of resources and jobs are kept away from "Urban" Sindh which happens to comprise the only two cities with major Urdu-speaking populations? Come on Central and Upper Sindhis, we're better integrated than yourself with the diverse people of Lower Sindh-the coastal Baloch, the Kachhis, the various Gujarati-ish people like Memons, Khojas, MaarwaaRiis and the like. We could be much better integrated within the entirety of Sindh were it not for politicians esp. Mr. Zia and later his pupil NS driving a rift between the ethnicities of the province just to break the vote-bank of the PPP.

well we are far from equality in any province but i guess the only province that has some sort of EQUALITY is the province of SINDH....KARACHI is totally ruled by MQM which started off as a party for the URDU SPEAKING people....so i guess not the URDU SPEAKING but the other provinces people should be complaining like the BALOCHIS...no no infact the PATHANS settled in BALOCHISTAN should complain that give us equal right... or the SERAIKIS in PUNJAB.....

There is no excuse for lack of equality in Pakistan. Either its in Punjab, Sindh or anywhere. But I don't feel like we're unequals. Forget Sindh, I live in Punjab and I'm better off than most native Punjabis!

sindh by far out of the lot is a very fair province...and all the problems that the urdu speaking have well the SCRIPT comes from LONDON....
Sigh... Ok I now two can play at the same game. You do remember who is President right now? A Sindhi from a family with origins in Punjab.

Your jackass is worse than our jackass.

as a mohajir that still has family in india. i want to say that there is no way in hell that i want to have a confederation with india.
also the whole family thing is quite misleading because i have never really met any family members from india. even when we have there has been the whole india pakistan tension thing.
people need to calm no mohajir wants confederation with india. all i want is a strong united pakistan that does not give a crap about a persons ethnicity but values his character, integrity and intellect

Theres this book, The Duel by Tariq Ali, it describes the MQM in this fashion:

Political power in Karachi rests in the hands of the MQM (Muttahida Qaumi MOvement/United National Movement), an unsavory outfit created in 1983 during Zia's dictatorship. It began life in 1978 as a student group set up by Altaf Hussain with a membership restricted to Urdu-speaking students in the Sind. These were the children of Muslim refugees who had fled India in 1947 and sought a new home in Pakistan. Many remained poor and suffered from job discimination. The new organization played on these resentments and gave them voice, but soon acquired notoriety for its involvement in protection rackets and other kinds of violence.

#1 Formed by the army
#2 Recruited the poor class desperate for jobs
#3 They played up the divisions for their goals
#4 Its a party, not the public!

So quit using MQM's example as anything meaningful.

What a stupid thread. Guess.. what! I am urdu speaking.

Thanks WebMaster. You can close this thread, if you want to. Just was thinking what most people in this forum wanted after I heard what my friend and Altaf Hussain wanted for Pakistan.

All too easy to divide Pakistanis - divide them by ethnicity, language and confession.

Why is it so easy to divide Pakistanis? What unites them?

It's easy to divide Pakistanis because they are not united around VALUES, their "identity" is given to them by politicans who see great benefit in a populace divided by non-identities such as ethnicity, language and heritage - Yes, Identity is not organic, it is CREATED, no one after the Quaid has suggested that Pakistanis are a unique peoples. No politicians have ever suggested this because their bread and butter, not to mention their seats in the NA or PA, are tied to these idiot identities and not to VALUES, which any or all Pakistanis can see themselves in as persons.

What do Sindhi want, What do Pakhtuns Want, What do balouchi want, What do Punjabis Want -- who Cares? What matters is what Pakistanis want. There is more to Pakistan than these petty, silly, idiot notions of identity.

:pakistan::pakistan:

Reality is quite different. There's still some Pakistanis who identify themselves as Sindhi, Baloch, Punjabi, Pakhtoon.

I dont care much about ethnic groups, I'm Pakistani and only Pakistani. I agree with you we should be more united and just be Pakistanis and work together as one people to develop Pakistan.

We didn't form the party. We don't vote for it. Pres. Zia chose a captain from the army to head this party which he formed to deny BB a chunk of votes on her return.

like i said brother LIAQUAT ALI KHAN,FATIMA SURIYA BHAJIYA,JAVED MIADAD & MUSHRAAF....where is the side lining of URDU SPEAKING people.... and on top of it all you have your language as the national language....HELL I should feel sidelined now!!!

Mr. Miandad is Memon and therefore Sindhi-Gujarati. Btw, so is Mr. Farooq Sattar the second highest official of the MQM.

But brother these people made their place in the society on the basis of their talent, which is the way our country should function, not on the bases of clan affiliations.

...and all the problems that the urdu speaking have well the SCRIPT comes from LONDON....

Again you seem to think that all Urdu-speakers are members of the MQM. Open your eyes and see the fact that only a small fraction is.

...however what i feel is that in karachi the urdu is daily becoming BOLLYWOOD type of urdu and alot of US are using words such as PARIVAAR....and god knows what an this is a fault by everyone

Ain't that the problem all over the country? That's why I-shall-not-watch-Bwood-trash should be part of all our New Years' Resolutions. I sincerely hope we all preserve our different languages and the better parts of our traditions...I've met people from all over Pakistan who still follow adaab and rakh-rakhao, every region has its own sets, so its not all over yet.

Btw I'm not against learning Indian cultures. They represent ancient civilizations, the fallen, the rising...we can't be human and divorce ourselves from human history. But culture and nationality are two separate things and should be understood as such.
