Leonardo at IDEAS 2016

At IDEAS 2016 Leonardo showcases its Vixen 1000E with IFF and SkyWard

Vixen 1000E is a high performance AESA radar designed for fighter/interceptor aircraft building on over 60 years of Selex ES’s fire control radar experience. At IDEAS 2016, Leonardo showcases the Vixen 1000E radar coupled with the company's SkyWard infrared search & track system and the Selex ES SIT426 Active Electronically Scanned Identification Friend-or-Foe (E-Scan IFF).

Vixen 1000E features an innovative roll-repositionable AESA antenna to provide a full ±100º field of regard allowing maximum situational awareness and platform survivability. This Wide Field of Regard (WFoR) allows the aircraft to turn away after missile launch, whilst still maintaining datalinks to the missile.

The AESA antenna is coupled to fully digital multi-channel exciter/receiver and processor Line Replaceable Units (LRUs). These provide a comprehensive mode suite which includes air-to-air, air-to-surface, interleaved and support functions, which can be readily adapted or extended in software to meet future needs.

The SkyWard is an Infrared Search and Track (IRST) system. It has been designed and developed to satisfy the more demanding requirements of 5th generation fighter aircraft with an embedded solution. A pod configuration is also available to allow easy installation on existing platforms. It comprises two Line Replaceable Units (LRU) - a Sensor Head Unit (SHU) and a Processor Unit (PU).

The Selex ES SIT426 Active Electronically Scanned Identification Friend-or-Foe (E-Scan IFF) Interrogator is a state-of-the-art solution, which allows effective exploitation of the new capabilities offered by next-generation AESA radars, such as the SELEX Galileo Raven.

Since Gripen is a non-factor in Pakistan, it's quite obvious that they're marketing it to the PAF for use on the JF-17. Elettronica - i.e. Leonardo's EW/ECM partner - is also there at IDEAS. If one were to source an Italian solution, it would be a combined Leonardo-Elettronica offering.

Seeing Korea and Taiwan get away with F-16V upgrades for less than $10-15m a unit, I would be shocked if the cost of these radars and EW/ECM would exceed that amount. It'll be interesting to see how things move forward now.

here is a question a real jargon. AESA has now been in the limelight and the offerings from China & Italy are on the table. But the question of HMD is still outstanding! Is the solution close to being made public?

Compared with KLJ-7A what it offer better? What max range of detection of MKI size plane? How many targets it can track and engage? Etc.

Honestly, we're not going to know anything about the Vixen's range or specific capabilities beyond what Leonardo is willing to release (which isn't much).

That said, the PAF could assess it differently in that Leonardo (via its relationship with Elettronica) could 'fuse' the AESA TRMs in the Vixen and ELT-568 EW suite, and that 'package' could be examined against the Chinese 'package.'

All we can say is, may the better package win.

We can end up with both if it fits the bill.

PAF route can be for both systems , One for Export high end markets (Gulf) Italian ,other for local / low tier markets (Africa) Chinese .

Probably Kick backs will ruin this one too ?
