We, too, have termite problems in Southern Germany and Southern Europe. I don't see whole villages being torn down, in fact, they are some of the best preserved villages in Europe.

Chinese Traditional architecture uses a lot of column also, and most of them use nanmu or some other kinds wood.
It is extreme expensive , 99.9% Chinese people can not afford that kind of column.

you don't know the answer for sure as wellI guess Vietnamese still use solar energy for drying their rice or food. They could use that as mattress or they use that for cover a new created tiles.
