Vietnam “feels threatened” by increasing Chinese and Thai investment in neighboring Laos and is concerned that the two countries will dethrone it as the top investor there, according to a senior Lao official.

The letter reaffirmed Vietnam’s aim to be the leading foreign investor in Laos for years to come, said the official, who is a member of the Lao People’s Revolutionary Party’s Central Committee.

He said Vietnam felt threatened that the investments from the two other leading investors will eclipse its own.

Vietnam emerged this year as Laos’s top foreign investor, pumping in a total of U.S. $5 billion in 449 projects in Laos.

Thailand and China are a close second and third, respectively, and all three compete for projects in Laos’s energy, mining, and agriculture sectors.

Thailand has some 760 projects amounting to more than U.S. $4.8 billion and China has more than 800 projects in Laos with a value of about U.S. $4 billion.

Vietnam has planned to increase its investment in Laos to U.S. $7 billion by 2015.

Laos and Vietnam, which have had a special friendship and cooperation agreement since 1978, have in recent years offered each other investment incentives and tax breaks to boost investment and trade.

The two countries plan to increase bilateral trade from about $725 million at present to $2 billion in 2015 and to $5 billion in 2020, according to the Vientiane Times.

Southwestern Laos's Champassak province, known as a tourism, social, and economic hub, has attracted the most investors.

Other leading investors in Laos over the past two decades include South Korea, France, Malaysia, Japan, India, Singapore, and the United States.

I think Indonesia should joint the party if Laos can offer good situation to start a business :) And Indonesia company's need to secure more natural resources for their ever growing industries back home :)

we only “feels threatened” when u can do all of those things.:pop:
In accordance with the targets and national perspectives, the Vietnamese Communists have found a new invention: the special treaty of friendship Lao-Vietnamese signed the 17th July 1977 with the only purpose of transforming Laos into a mere province of Vietnam. This is diametrically against the aspirations of the Lao people since its existence of several centuries.

In any case, under this disgraceful treaty, many military officers, advisers of all kinds and Vietnamese rushed to occupy the territory of Laos. It goes without saying that they have spoiled and destroyed natural and cultural property of the Lao nation. The population itself is changed into an ethnic, worse a subcategory of Vietnamese, deprived of fundamental rights.

Corruption has spread in all administrative levels; any notion related to independence, democracy, culture, religion ancestral shatter. The concept of territory and borders also goes up in smoke.

Then, October 26, 1999, in a burst of patriotism, a protest procession was attended by pupils, students, teachers and many citizens.

All called for a change to democracy. The movement has been checkmated and key leaders arrested, throw in jail and punished so far.

Ten years later, a second wave of protest was held the 2nd November 2009, from the several formations with the same patriotic leitmotiv for democracy, human rights, social justice. It was followed by the same kind of repression by the government of Vientiane.

We, Union for Lao Nation, we join the struggle to let our country free of the power exercised by foreigners and people of that ilk.
We strongly protest against the policies and actions towards the country and people from the Vietnamese communists and their supporters.

A/ Claims referred to Hanoi Government:

1 –Vietnamese army, police, advisers and illegal immigrants from Vietnam to remove out of Laos immediately and completely
2 – To stop interfering in the country's policy
3 – To Leave the national resolve their internal problems
4 – To respect the international rights
5 – To respect the 5 principles of peaceful coexistence

So Laos official statement is not enough :omghaha: and Vietnameses can't do a sh1t to Laos, it already open itself to the world and now multi-naitionals are rush into Laos for competition for project and business such Japan, Korea, Thailand...you think Vietnam can dictate it term to Laos  you Vietnamese are still frogs living in the well.

You vietname can't compete against anyones beside sell fish sauce and Pho, you dont have construction skill, you don't have business chain supply, you just can't compete beside throwing money into Laos's coffer and they will use its to finance infra-structure projects...and the best Vietnam can get is some nice word such" thank you, you're our brother and goot neighbor"

But we have lots of secret VN agents in Lao:pop:

Oki, we cant compete against Chinese-Thai, and Chinese mainland, so we just simply attack Thai again and send all Chinese back home like in 1979, problem in Laos solved

Use secret VN agents in Lao to assassin Chinese-Thai and Chinese mainland investors is good option, too, we r very good at it ,u know that :partay:

we are talking about economics affair don't we? not some supa powa military affairs between Vietnam and Laos. This article clearly mentions about Vietnam gov. worry if their economic relations with Laos is threatened by the ever increasing investment of China and Thai companies in Laos. And this is normal, because Thailand and China had direct land border with Laos and they can see the business opportunity in Laos. What Vietnam can do is to maximize her influence in Laos not by compete directly with Thai and China within economic framework, esp by adding more investment in Laos. You can talk about infrastructure project, joint venture with local companies to set up more new business in agro industry sector (because Vietnam has a strong point in this sector especially rice production), sugar cane and so on.

And you can also gain more benefits by propose joint venture with Thai and Chinese or maybe Malaysia, Singapore and Indonesia companies who want to set up new business in Laos, because Vietnam already get more experiences in Laos than the rests. I think, economic interconnection between ASEAN Countries will greatly benefit all of us and deter any future conflict that will may happen between ASEAN members.

But if you prefer conflicts and some barbarous manner like the Photos you showing now, i think soon or later Vietnam will be left behind in the global economics progression races.

Vietnam has less GDP than my province, perhaps even my hometown. Of course they cannot match China's investment in Laos and Cambodia. The next step would be to arm Cambodian and Laotian military to a higher standard, while slowly choking Vietnamese interest out of the region. When the time is right, disarm Vietnam to make an example out of them.

More nonsense to cover another nonsense. You are making a joke out of yourself. Or you just pretend to be vietnamese to ridiculate them?

A bunch of frogs looking up....from the well's bottom.

Viet Nam is doing land lease to grow rubber plantation in Laos and surveying Laos for mineral resources; these are priviledges that Laos does not give other foreigners with the exception of Viet Nam.:omghaha:

Laos is landlocked. Laos has to use Viet Nam to transport its goods to oversea markets. Thai will choke Laos for good and Laos know it. If it wasn't for 5 divisions of Vietnamese in Laos in the 1980's, Laos would have been a Thai province today in the name of democrappy.

Thai-Laos have brotherly relation, if Thai wants to annexe Laos, it could have done long before your so call 5 divisions came. But Vietnam don't lack of ambition to swallow Laos and that's because of China, Vietnam wouldn't dare to make any move, And Vietnam's dream of this wonderland is fallen apart when Laos is opened itself to the world

If Vietnam is so well treated and has privilege then why feel threatened by China and Thai ?
