Vietnam President Tran Dai Quang has given assurances that the country supports Bangladesh in its search for a permanent solution to the Rohingya crisis, says Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina.

The two leaders issued a joint statement after meeting for bilateral talks at Hasina’s offices on Monday.

The Rohingya crisis is a threat to the region’s peace and stability, the statement said.

Nearly 700,000 Rohingya refugees have crossed the border into Bangladesh since the Myanmar military began an operation in the border state of Rakhine on Aug 25. Many refugees have described gruesome scenes of murder, rape and arson during the operation.

The UN and US have called the military operation ‘ethnic cleansing’, while Myanmar refers to the operation as an ‘war on terror’.

Though Bangladesh and Myanmar have reached an agreement regarding the return of the refugees to Myanmar, the repatriation effort has been delayed due to incomplete preparations.

Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina requested the support of Vietnam in achieving a peaceful resolution to the crisis.

“President Tran Dai Quang has pledged his support for a peaceful solution,” she said.

The Vietnam president met with Hasina at her offices at 10am. The prime minister greeted him with flowers. The two leaders then engaged in bilateral talks while serving as the heads of their respective delegations.

Bangladesh and Vietnam signed three Memoranda of Understanding on bilateral cooperation.

The Vietnamese president has come on a three-day trip to Bangladesh at the invitation of President Md Abdul Hamid. It is the first trip to Bangladesh by a Vietnamese head of state in 14 years.
