It's clear from your comment that a lot of peolpe did not know very much about SCS situation. If you didn't know what's goal for a war, what's gain, what's loss - so that mean no point to say it so sure "Vietnam has no chance to against China if war broke out".
SCS disputed is complex situation. China could go all way out with war and gain victory if US and UN on their side like in 198x, but not now.

Like I said earlier, a WAR with the China is not on the horizon. There is absolutely no need to go to war over a pile of rocks on the SCS, but the Jingoist from both sides seems to be pushing for it.

Problem is china don't respect rules of internal law, like UNCLOS what China has been signed, to solve the dispute peacefully, China denied to go to internal arbitration with Philippine recently and send his ships to threat and bully both Vietnam and Philippine.

It seems last year China just setup a new domestic oil drilling platform within the China Nine Section Lines where close to Vietnam coastal.

Start from 2012, now China can build these huge domestic platform so more China oil drilling platforms will setup in the Nine Section Lines, no more space left here.

Those Vietnamese are gonna destroy the oil rig with Su-30s and MiG-21s. China needs to set up some kind of air defense.

So based on your post that it's not value to both side for efforts a war!? So There is nothing like "no chance to win" because efforts and affects are different for both side.

If like that, China had hard problem to solve with this situation now, because their actions ( claiming with ridiculous way for 80% SCS, occupied Island by military forces ) in past, now, they can not follow that way or withdrawal from their illegal and ridiculous claim. ( or they didn't want to withdraw because if they gains control of Islands, they will made Island become points for them claim and control all over SCS area - very big benefit )

they need to learn how to fly first, then buying more C4SI systems (cost billions) to support long coordinated systematic air strike (probably need 10 years for those creatures to learn based on their primitive understanding of modern warfare and high tech)

then they need to buy more advanced air-launched aire-to-surface missiles (millions for unit price) again years of clueless training``

Hypothetically speaking if Vietnam and China went to war it would be totally different from the one fought between Vietnam and the US.

I am no military strategist, but just on location alone China is next to Vietnam which means resupply lines are pretty much unstoppable as compared to the US which is already on flight time more than 10 hours away. A simple train ride from Nanning to Hanoi will get you there faster and thats a slow train.

Plus China already manufactures a huge number of armaments, which means they can easily replace spare parts for any sophisticated system without assistance from any nations (except maybe Russia for engines). Vietnam is not a major arms producer er, any shortfall in spares for aircraft etc will be dependent on resupply from their arms supplier which is subject to blockades. Assuming Vietnam pilots took down 2 planes for every 1 they lose they would still run out of planes before China did, not to mention the ground troops will easily cross the border (being so near) and have full ressuply lines.

Vn vs China without a third party intervention is just a losing battle, even if they can't hold the ground they can turn the country backwards. Its just reality
