There are enough photos of the police around the world beating woman with truncheons but somehow the above photos are supposed to be more shocking.

I don't think we are discussing "global torture against women". The thread is regarding Taliban, that's why those pictures are here.

By the way "enough photos of Police beating women" never justify torture against women.

Quite frankly, yes.

It's okay to beat up violent criminals, mobs, riots to attain peace. But is it acceptable to beat up women for showing her face? You and I both know that this Talibunny culture promotes beating up women day in and day out over every little thing.

Their treatment of women is horrible, that is no exaggeration.

The problem is that Afghan Taliban have in-fact "deteriorated" picture of Islam through lot of their actions. They in-fact, to great "extent", used name of Islam to justify what they were doing wrong and this resulted in projection of bad image .

As far as invasion of Afghanistan is concerned, they are suppose to fight the invaders, it is understood.

Innocent lives being lost due to action of US and Allied Forces shouldn't be acceptable and so is Taliban killing innocent people just because they disagree with them.

They treated men just teh same, if not worse.

It's not an issue of feminism, rather an issue of rigid application of certain obscure 17'th century tracks, which had never even been applied in those days, but somehow found expression in teh 21st century.

Although I wouldn't take any commentary along with the pictures as Gods given word. It may be due to revealing their faces, or may be something else entirely. Pictures don't always reveal the entire truth.

Another thing to be understood, is that such a repressive regime could not have existed without support from those being governed in such a way. When society is at such a stage, that even people from these women's own families would support such harsh measures, who are we to stand in the way of the southern/eastern Afghan culture.

Many people readily accepted these measures, in return for security of life and property, removal of checkposts that charged all vehicles goign and leaving an area, and other issues regarding the fractured state of AFghanistan. For most people at that time, the Taliban were a blessing, considering that the mujahideen commanders before them, were not known for their enlightenment either. In fact, some sitting members of the Afghan parliament hold teh exact same views as teh Taliban, or are even more harsh in their attitudes.

Removing this regime will not change the reality of Afghan culture (except for a few more "liberal" pockets in Kabul and the north.)

If they want to be oppressed, hell let them be.

For Pakistan, the taliban of AFghanistan were good, and the first time we had a friendly regime on our western border. That freed up a lot of our forces, and we were able to look india in the eye.

Looks like things are heading back in that direction, and the taliban will soon be incorporated into the mainstream of AFghani politics. We'll see a swift rewriting of history and change of priorities from teh "west" when that happens.

Well the Taleban hide behind innocents because they know if they try to fight on a man to man basis they would lose and lose big.

Not to be apologetic towards the Taliban, i do think it's rather difficult to fight man to man when being bombed from a mile high, and airstrikes called upon you whenever you empty a small arms round.
