Obama discusses Osama operation with PM Manmohan Singh
Press Trust of India, Updated: May 10, 2011 14:33 IST

New Delhi: Prime Minister Manmohan Singh and US President Barack Obama spoke over the phone on Monday night and discussed the American operation that killed Osama bin Laden in Abbottabad in Pakistan and also talked about the situation in the region.

A PMO spokesman said Singh and Obama also discussed further growth and development of Indo-US relations. "It was a warm conversation which covered wide-ranging subjects," he said.

A statement issued by White House in Washington said Obama spoke to Singh to discuss the "successful American action against Osama bin Laden." However, it did not give further details.

This is the first conversation between the two leaders since the killing of Osama on May 2 in a raid by US Special Forces in Abbottabad.

The White House statement said the two leaders also reviewed progress in implementing the initiatives launched during Obama's November 2010 visit to India.

"The two leaders re-affirmed their commitment to building a global, strategic partnership, including defence cooperation, and looked forward to the upcoming meetings of the Strategic Dialogue, the Homeland Security Dialogue, the Joint Space Working Group and the High-Technology Cooperation Group," the statement said.

The two leaders also discussed global and regional issues of mutual concern.

Singh had termed bin Laden's killing as "a significant step forward" and asked the international community and Pakistan in particular to work comprehensively to end the activities of all terror groups.

The Prime Minister had hoped that bin Laden's elimination would deal a "decisive blow" to al Qaeda and other terrorist groups".

I wonder how low you have to be to create a self serving news and then go on to celebrate it

Russia is a Christian country, Cuba is a Christian country - Does the US like them ?

And yes we are not friends of Americans, just their partners and will be so as long as OUR ambitions are met - a thing that has exemplified the Indian foreign policy.

I don't see India, or Indian foreign policy, as being dominant in the region, as some posters are suggesting.

The West will prop it up for a bit longer, but China is too far ahead and with too much of a head start even if India had the basis to be a superpower (which it does not).

There's little that can be done to stop the Chinese ascent. It will be Chinese foreign policy that dominates Asia within 10 years or about that much.

Never will India move into the American camp. I will bet we may even move in with the Chinese but never with Americans.

Certain things remain deep inside u know like being imprinted.

Nobody is talking about stopping their ascendancy or overshadowing their influence here.

The topic here is that the American and Indian interests are converging and the steps being taken by the Americans turning out to be a boon for us.

American foreign policy in Asia and Indian foreign policy does coincide, just as Chinese foreign policy and Pakistani foreign policy also coincide.

But it will be Chinese foreign policy that becomes dominant in Asia.

India is a sovereign country (in true sense) and wont allow any foreign interference

same thing cant happen to India ...too many parameters

I haven't seen any Hindu becoming suicide bomber or spreading terrorism then why will west hate us??

yeah we always cheer our relation with other country as long as it benefits Indians and India

although it is off topic but according to our experience and analysis: U.S does not need suicide bombers to make some country its enemy.

I don't remember the name but some known personality said: Enmity with U.S is surely dangerous but friendship with U.S is even more dangerous.

Example is my country itself. .

hmm. . you seem pretty excited about the news. . Well, the ruling elite of Pakistan has accepted everything that their american masters have told them to do except agreeing to implement something that is in accordance with Indian foreign policy. . . So best of luck this time. . :coffee:
