The people have spoken. Congrats to Rouhani's supporters.
This should be a wakeup call for Principalists. They need to be serious about giving the people a strong alternative to the reformists candidates. In '92, they thought they could do it without Ahmadenijad's support but they blamed the loss on the fact that the candidates were not united, and votes got split. In '96, they didn't do the same mistake, and had only one candidate at the end, and they still lost, because they still think they don't need Ahmadenijad. They thought stealing Ahmadenijad's slogans and tactics was enough.
Raisee was a bad choice. I think Raisee motivated people to come and vote for Rouhani. People who might not have been happy with Rouhani and might have stayed home, came out to keep Raisee out of the office. Ghalibaf alone could have had better numbers, but I don't think he could have won either. Fear is a strong factor in convincing voters to keep your opposition out of the office, and Reformists are very good at scaring people, and both Ghalibaf and Raisee (Raisee even more) allow such fear tactics to work against them. When the reformists opponent is a Military Man & a Judge, they become good targets. Neither a military man nor a judge can pretend to be the man of the people, that's why they failed at populists strategies. Raisee was such a terrible choice that I heard from a Rouhani supporter that the regime put Raisee forward to convince people to vote for Rouhani.
Anyway, Rouhani won fair and square.
