Universe expanding faster than expectation

Washington D.C.: Turns out, in the universe, everything is flying apart quite a bit quicker than previously believed.

Astronomers using NASA's Hubble Space Telescope have discovered that the universe is expanding 5 percent to 9 percent faster than expected.

"This surprising finding may be an important clue to understanding those mysterious parts of the universe that make up 95 percent of everything and don't emit light, such as dark energy, dark matter, and dark radiation," said study leader Adam Riess of The Johns Hopkins University.

Riess' team made the discovery by refining the universe's current expansion rate to unprecedented accuracy, reducing the uncertainty to only 2.4 percent. The team made the refinements by developing innovative techniques that improved the precision of distance measurements to faraway galaxies.

One possible explanation could be a new type of subatomic particle that may have changed the balance of energy in the early universe, scientists believe.

Astronomers used Hubble to measure the distances to stars in 19 galaxies with more precision than ever before.

It was Hubble observations that made the bombshell discovery in 1998 that the universe was not only expanding, but expanding at a faster and faster rate.

An invisible force called "dark energy" is hypothesised to be repelling the galaxies but its nature is still a complete mystery.

The results will appear in The Astrophysical Journal

what does expansion of universe really causes?

. .
Sparsing of the space i.e. the star will be farther from each other than today and if you survive another billion years, you will see far less number stars in the night sky....you will be really alone.
so not any major effect but just that stars would be farther from us than today

Perhaps, I'm no expert but I guess the cosmic radiations will reduce but I don't know how that will effect life (if any at that time) a lot and if any humans (hypothetically survive) at that time will give up any idiotic notions of finding other planets for lving rather they will value the Earth a lot and there would be no atheist at that time since science would have matured enough to believe in one God but that's another topic. I don't think humans will survive that long but Allah knows the best.

No. All starts u see in sky are from our galaxy and distance between stars in galaxy is NOT growing.

However is u survive some 10+ billion years u will indeed see less stars in the sky, however not because of universe expansion but because stars are dying and number of new born stars is slowly decreasing

what does expansion of universe really causes?
Innertion and dark energy (if dark energy exists).

The Human if they still exist they wont go beyond 300 million years as the sun will grow up by 10%.

Well, the sky will be totally different as two galaxies of Andromeda and the milky way in the process of colliding to each other.

That time you will see more stars than ever if you stay that long you may see no night at all.

Within 10 billion time frame the stars still born as the universe still teaming with hydrogen gas the main ingredient of any star.

Hey humans will be extinct much earlier but I was talking about hypothetical scenario
No one knows for sure when will the human will extinct.

That's in god hands, but since we human mean enough to live in peace yes that might bring our doom soon.

All what you are doing is a guess at best. No body knows for a definite answer. Even when scientist run these simulations, a minute change in one parameter changes the whole outcome thus everything is a guess and nothing else. The only thing we for sure is that universe is expanding at an ever increasing rate.

No one knows for sure when will the human will extinct.

If you carefully see all the humans are kind of preparing for a war...each country is accumulating WMD Israel, Iran, India, ISIS, Iraq etc

You owe me a nickel. :big_boss:

You know this how? :what:
Sun's life is around 5 billion years but much before that it will swell in size and around 10% increase in size is sufficient to end life and even Earth can spiral into the Sun but even much before that the Earth will become uninhabitable but even much before that some asteroid will hit the Earth directly but even much before ....... ..Is it enough?

We are the only species that made it to the moon and sent satellites into the solar system. That took about a few thousand years. An asteroid could hit the Earth, but given the timescale and the rate of technological advances....

Still can't say Extinction will occur with 100% assurance, unless you're a pessimistic nihilist.
