UNITED NATIONS, June 9, 2010 (AFP) - World powers slapped the fourth set of UN sanctions on Iran Wednesday hoping to persuade the Islamic republic to curb its suspect nuclear program by widening military and financial restrictions.

The vote in the 15-member council was 12 in favor of the US-drafted resolution, with Lebanon abstaining and Brazil and Turkey voting against.

The resolution, co-sponsored by Britain and France with the backing of Russia and China, expands an arms embargo and bans the country from sensitive activities like uranium mining.

It authorizes states to conduct high-sea inspections of vessels believed to be ferrying banned items for Iran and adds 40 entities to a list of people and groups subject to travel restrictions and financial sanctions.

The Security Council resolution was approved despite the sustained efforts of Brazil and Turkey to head off the measures and promote a nuclear fuel swap deal they reached with Tehran last month.

The West has cold-shouldered that proposal, saying it did not allay fears that Tehran is using its contested nuclear drive as a cover to produce nuclear weapons. Iran insists its nuclear program is for civilian purposes only.

Four rounds of UN sanctions have now been imposed on Iran since December 2006. The third round was adopted on March 3, 2008.

Ahmadinejad has angrily warned that negotiations with Britain, China, France, Russia, the United States and Germany on his country's nuclear program would be terminated if the sanctions were passed.

"I have said that the US government and its allies are mistaken if they think they can brandish the stick of resolution and then sit down to talk with us, such a thing will not happen," Ahmadinejad said.

Among those subject to the new travel restrictions are Javad Rahiqi, head of the Atomic Energy Organization of Iran's Isfahan nuclear technology center.

According to the text, 22 of the entities are linked to Iran's nuclear and ballistic missile programs, 15 are "owned, controlled, or acting on behalf of the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps" and three are controlled by the Islamic Republic of Iran Shipping Lines.

The western campaign was boosted by getting Russia and China onboard.

Key Point of UN Sanctions

-- bars countries from selling Iran heavy weaponry like battle tanks, armored combat vehicles, large caliber artillery systems, combat aircraft, attack helicopters, warships, missiles or missile systems.

-- prohibits Iran from undertaking any activity related to ballistic missiles that are capable of carrying nuclear weapons.

-- bans countries from providing any technology or assistance related to ballistic missiles.

-- prohibits Iran from investing in sensitive activities abroad like uranium mining, enrichment or ballistic missile-related activities.

-- obligates countries to prohibit such investment in their companies or on their territory.

--- authorizes states to conduct high-sea inspections of vessels believed to be ferrying banned items to or from Iran.

-- provides for cargo inspections, both in any port or at sea, if there is reason to suspect a ship is carrying conventional arms or nuclear missile items for Iran.

-- obligates states to seize and dispose of any prohibited items that are found in such cargo.

-- asks states to give any information related to steps taken by Iran's air cargo division or the Islamic Republic of Iran Shipping Lines (IRISL) to evade sanctions including efforts by them to rename their vessels.

-- calls on countries to block any financial transaction, including those related to insurance and re-insurance tied to nuclear weapons proliferation.

-- obligates states to require their nationals to exercise vigilance when doing any business with Iranian entities including those of the Islamic Revolutionary Guards Corps and IRISL if such business could contribute to Iran's proliferation, sensitive activities or sanctions evasions.

-- urges countries to prohibit licensing of Iranian banks on their territories if there is a potential connection to proliferation.

-- calls on states to prohibit their banks from opening branches in Iran if there is a potential connection to proliferation.

-- restates the Security Council's commitment to dialogue,
including support for the negotiating efforts of the so-called P5-plus-1: Britain, China, France, Russia, the United States plus Germany.

-- notes the efforts of Brazil and Turkey "toward an agreement with Iran on the Tehran Research Reactor that could serve as a confidence-building measure."

Difficult times for Iran...Wonder what would happen to deal between Brazi, Turkey and Iran...Iran clearly said that any more sanctions would be a point of no return from the alleged nuclear program....

TEHRAN, June 9, 2010 (AFP) - The new UN sanctions imposed on Wednesday on Iran are an "incorrect step" and will "complicate" the situation more, foreign ministry spokesman Ramin Mehmanparast told state-owned Al-Alam Television.
"The move towards the resolution was an incorrect step. It was neither constructive nor efficient in solving the issue. We think it will complicate the situation more," he said after the UN Security Council approved a fourth set of sanctions against Tehran over its controversial nuclear programme.
Iran's chief nuclear negotiator Saeed Jalili, a few minutes before the sanctions vote was held, said that Tehran would deliver a harsh response if it was confronted with new UN measures.
"We remind them (world powers) that a path of confrontation with a nation's rights is a dead end and bound to fail. It will be useless and costly for those who pursue it," Jalili was quoted as saying by state news agency IRNA.
"Choosing confrontation will be met with Iran's firm response," he added.

when the p5 agree on something, medium powers cant prevent it from happening.

Another Iraq style 'regime change' in the pending? :undecided: Iranian oil anyone?

Brazil, Turkey vote against UN Security Council draft resolution on Iran sanctions

UNITED NATIONS, June 9 (Xinhua) -- Brazil and Turkey, the two non-permanent members of the UN Security Council, on Wednesday voted against the draft resolution of the UN Security Council to impose new sanctions against Iran. Lebanon, another non-permanent member of the Security Council, abstained from the vote.

Brazil and Turkey mediated an agreement with Iran to promote a nuclear fuel swap they reached with Tehran last month.

Maria Luiza Ribeiro Viotti, Brazil's permanent representative to the United Nations, told an open Council meeting before the vote that "the adoption of sanctions runs contrary to the successful efforts of Brazil and Turkey in a negotiated ( opportunity ) in regards to its trade program."

"The Tehran declaration showed that dialogue and cooperation can do more than punitive action," she said.

For his part, Frtugrul Apakan, the Turkish permanent representative to the United Nations, said at the Council meeting "we are deeply concerned that adoption sanctions will negatively affect the momentum created by the declaration and the overall diplomatic process."

"Our vote against the resolution should not be construed as indifference to questions regarding the nature of Iran's nuclear program," he said. "We call upon Iran to show full transparency and cooperate with the IAEA to restore confidence."

"The sanction's resolution was adopted today despite our unrelenting efforts," he said. "The adoption should not be seen as an end to diplomatic efforts."

"After the adoption, efforts toward finding a peaceful solution towards this solution has to be continued more resolutely," he said.

The Security Council voted to adopt the new resolution on Iran. It is the fourth set of sanctions imposed by the Security Council on Iran since December 2006. The last resolution on Iran sanctions was adopted in March 2008.

The U.S. resolution was co-sponsored by Britain and France. An agreement was reached on the draft resolution in the wake of rounds of hard negotiations by the five permanent members of the Security Council -- Britain, China, France, Russia and the United States -- and Germany.

I wonder how Iran will react to this. It is clear the they will keep pushing for more sanctions till they stop their program completely.

ISLAMABAD: Pakistan said that issue related to Iran’s nuclear program should be resolved through reconciliation and the international community should hold dialogue in this regard.

While talking to DawnNews on Wednesday, the Foreign Office spokesman Abdul Basit said that Iran has the right to pursue a peaceful nuclear program, however, Iran should rectify the concerns shown by the international community.

Basit said that the issue could only be resolved through dialogue and added that sanctions would only increase tensions.

Answering a question, he said that there was no pressure on Pakistan regarding the Pak-Iran gas pipeline project and that the fresh sanctions imposed on Iran will not affect the project.—DawnNews

lool
you're obviously new to world politics. A war has never been more unlikely. Back in the early 2000's a war was a million times more likely.

I wonder how Iran will react to this. It is clear the they will keep pushing for more sanctions till they stop their program completely.

you two, were you sleep in the past 31 years?
This is the 4th round of sanctions. Nothing ever changes Iran's policy. Plus, these sanctions are EXTREMELY INEFFECTIVE and that is even an understatement. Look at the things that have been passed and this is said to be the strongest one.
1) No sale of weapons to or by Iran (nothing new)
2) A new ban on sale of missiles and helicopters to Iran. Iran never buys that **** from anyone anyways lol
3) Tighter grip on IRGC members (boofucingwho)
etc...

btw, remember that Iran created hezbollah when oil was around 10 dollars a barrel and we were in a war and under sanctions!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! If the mullahs didn't give a **** back then, what makes you think they give a **** about these sanctions when oil is between 70-150 dollars a barrel?

I wonder how Iran will react to this. It is clear the they will keep pushing for more sanctions till they stop their program completely.

"The BBC News website's world affairs correspondent, Paul Reynolds, says this fourth round of sanctions is unlikely to have any more effect on Iranian policy than the first three.

Iran's vital economic interests have not been targeted and Tehran has already developed systems of evasion, he says
