KARACHI/QUETTA- Two accused involved in the murder of Muttahida Qaumi Movement (MQM) leader Dr Imran Farooq were arrested on Thursday.
Sources said the suspects were identified as Mohsin Ali Syed and Khalid Shamim. However, the prime suspect in the case, Kashif Ali, was still underground. They are the same people about whom there had been speculations for the last few years that after killing Imran Farooq they came to Pakistan through Sri Lanka and were arrested by security institutions at Karachi airport.
Official sources confirmed that the two accused, identified as Mohsin Ali Syed and Khalid Shamim, were arrested by Frontier Corps (FC) at Chaman Border while entering Pakistan from Afghanistan. DG FIA was informed about their arrest upon which he sent a report to the Interior Ministry.
Khalid Shamim is stated to be a person who had played a key role in Imran Farooq’s assassination, while Moazzam Ali who was detained from the MQM Headquarters Nine-Zero had assisted Mohsin Ali and Kashif Ali in going to London, arranging their tickets and admitting them in a university.
Sources said that after the arrest of the two key accused, Imran Farooq murder case has reached at an important stage. They will be presented before an anti-terrorism court (ATC) in the next 24 hours by the FIA for remand. An FC spokesman said the two suspects belonged to a Karachi-based political party.
Several questions had been raised about the arrest of the two key accused in the murder of Imran Farooq and sources in Islamabad said that British officials were now demanding their handover. The investigation agencies have obtained necessary information from them and shared with the British officials.
The sources said that negotiations would be held with the British officials in the next few days and a decision might be taken regarding the involvement of the British government.
