Turkish Peace Operations in Syria (Operation Olive Branch) Updates & Discussions

But Erdogan is planning to give his friend, Barzani, the green light to send the Rojava Peshmerga into northeastern Syria. The Rojava Peshmerga, unlike the YPG, are hardcore Kurdish nationalists and separatists.

Erdogan's Kurdish allies (i.e. the Peshmerga) are more pro-separatism than his enemies (i.e. the YPG). This is a fact. The Peshmerga won't tolerate Arabs in northeastern Syria. They'll get rid of them just like they did in Kirkuk a few years ago, and Ankara will turn a blind eye to it because of its strong business and economic ties with the Barzani tribe.

Turkey can only preserve Syria's unity by helping Assad recapture all areas from every single rebel faction, including the FSA. But Turkey isn't willing to do that. The Turks do not have a clear strategy in Syria. They've slowly moved away from the Idlib rebels, but they're still not committed to helping Assad. In other words, the Turks are simply doing what America and Russia have done, which is carving de facto statelets out of Syrian territory.
Turkey is actualy the country who is protecting Syria territorial integrity the most, compare to Iran mullahs who actualy doesn't give a fvck if Syria breaks up or not all they care is actualy are a punch of graves here and there...

.
Only afterwards. There's no need for panicking. :)
I wonder how far Erdogan will go here, because whatever he does it will set a precedent for the future. I thin the TSK should increase military aid to other FSA controlled areas and the TSK needs to drive both east and west at the same time to connect territories liberated through ES with territories under the control of FSA-related rebels. This reminds me of the Bosnian war where the Bosniak and Croat forces were trying to liberate as much as possible before the big boys started getting involved and once they did the show was over. With that said the TSK needs to move and move FAST. God speed brothers.

If Turkey refuses to hand the Azaz-Jarabulus corridor over to Assad/Damascus, then Syria will break up

No. Assad should first show he is willing to fight against YPG/PKK before Turkey's hand him any teritory. Since the Syrian's conflit Assad and YPG was more allied than ennemy, nobody can dennied that.

Assad wich had lost many troop in this war, would certainly accept a peace deal with YPG autonomy rather to fight another group this is what Russia and maybe enven US want.

We cannot trust Assad. Hafez Assad had protected PKK and Occalan during decade against Turkey, Bachar would do the same now, only he would always pretend that he cannot control North Syria enough to end PKK attackt against Turkey. And maybe he would speak the true if PLL/YPG has autonomy region.

And Turkey's occupation is good thing for Assad if he want to fight against YPG/PKK not the contrary.

And if Turkey insists on doing things your way, then it will end up bringing Assad and the YPG closer together than ever before, which will be disastrous for the Turks.

The Turks should hand over Azaz-Jarabulus to Assad and completely disengage from the FSA. Only then would the Syrian government trust Turkey again and decide to sever its ties with the YPG.

As long as Turkey doesn't fully commit itself to helping Assad and as long as the Turks continue using anti-government jihadist proxies in the Euphrates Shield campaign, then Assad will end up aligning even closer with the Kurds.

In fact, the Russians apparently provided the Kurds of Manbij with anti-tank missiles today:

"Turkey to hand over Azaz-Jarablus" - "disengage from FSA". You're basically asking Turkey to end it's operations completely, even if we were to do this it would only allow YPG to grow stronger. How can you say Turkey is trying to or will breakup Syria when Assad is literally doing that himself, by supporting YPG.

Stop creating fantasies in your head, no one's handing over anything to Assad other than coward YPG and no one else will. Anyways, once Turkey starts it's operations all your fantasies will be crushed.

Even before Turkey go in Syria, Assad and YPG was more friends than foe.
And frankly I don't see the problem for Assad if really want to fight against YPG/PKK....he should have more power over the YPG if they don't control the whole North of Syria.

And Turkey cannot trust "words". We must had something to negociate or push Assad to make the good chooce.

Russian general confirms a Kurdish-Russian deal against Turkey

ARA News

Lieutenant General Sergei Rudskoy, Chief of the Main Operational Directorate of the Russian General Staff, has confirmed a deal between Russia, the Syrian government and the Kurds in Manbij against Turkey and Turkish-backed rebels.

“The detachments of the Syrian army approached the south-west areas of the city of Menbij, which is under control of Kurdish militia groups,” he said.

“Today, the Russian Centre for reconciliation of the opposing sides sent the first humanitarian convoy with food, medicines and items of the first necessity to Menbij,” he added.

Furthermore, the Russian Army confirmed the entry of Syrian army forces to the Syrian Democratic Forces-held areas.

“In addition, since March 3 the Syrian Armed Forces enter the territory occupied by Kurdish militia groups [in reference to SDF] according to the agreements reached with the participation of the command of the Russian grouping of forces in Syria,” General Sergei Rudskoy said.

The general added that the Syrian government is taking measures to resume the work of state authorities in Menbij and surrounding areas.

The SDF-linked Manbij Military Council announced on Thursday that they have reached an agreement with Russia for the protection of the western villages of Manbij from the Turkish army and Turkey-backed rebels, handing over villages in Western Manbij to the Syrian government.

“Defending the civilians and protecting them from the adverse impact of the war, ensuring the security of Manbij and frustrating the invasion plans of the Turkish army against Syrian soil are the goals we have taken for all the peoples living on the lands of Syria,” the Manbij Military Council (MMC) said in a statement.

“In order to realize these goals of ours, we as Manbij Military Council confirm that we have handed over the defense of the line – where villages between the positions of our forces in western Manbij and Turkish-affiliated gangs are located – to Syrian state forces as part of the alliance we have made with Russian officials,” the council said.

“The SDF ceded this territory west of Manbij because it is clear that there are limits to the extent that the United States will intervene on behalf of the SDF’s interests west of the Euphrates,” the statement added.

However, despite of the alleged handover of some villages to the Syrian army, heavy clashes continued on Saturday between the Turkish-led Euphrates Shield rebels and the SDF forces west of Manbij. This makes it unclear whether these areas are handed over to the Syrian government, since clashes are ongoing since Thursday.

“Euphrates Shield forces continue to attack MMC regions. They failed, and a lot of them were killed in recent clashes [about 34 km] west of Manbij,” SDF-spokesperson Sharvan Darwish said on Saturday.

In an interview with ARA News, Nicholas A. Heras, Bacevich Fellow at the Center for a New American Security (CNAS), said: “Ceding that territory west of Manbij to Assad’s forces, via a Russian-brokered deal, sends a signal to Turkey that the SDF understands the strategic value of the territory to Euphrates Shield, and will spite Turkey by giving it to Assad.”

“Notably, the SDF has retained territory south and west of Manbij that continues to allow it an access road to Afrin via Assad-controlled areas. Access to Afrin from the area of Manbij is the real strategic prize of this territory for the SDF,” he concluded.

Aaron Stein, a resident senior fellow at the Atlantic Council’s Rafik Hariri Center for the Middle East, told ARA News that the Syrian Kurds have reached their current autonomous status due to navigating its relations with greater powers.

“The Syrian Kurds are where they are because they manage great power relations. The YPG [Kurdish People’s Protection Units] are nakedly self interested, and have proved quite deft in playing off more powerful actors to their ultimate benefit,” he said.

Lnur Cevik, an adviser to Turkish President Recep Tayip Erdogan, said at a conference in Russia last week that Turkey would stop its operations after capturing Manbij.

“As soon Manbij is captured, Turkey will stop its operation in Syria,” Cevik said.

However, he also said that Turkey would try to avoid attacking the Syrian army that is protected by the Russian air forces.

“Turkey is not going to go into a confrontation and moving Assad by force. That is why Turkey, Russia and Iran are holding the Astana talks, so, here using force against Assad, I do not think, is on board,” Cevik said.

I hope this eventually happens:

Syrian Turkmen demand recognition of mother tongue
Official calls for formal recognition of Turkmen language – alongside Arabic – in majority-Turkmen areas of Syria

GENEVA

Syrian Turkmen have demanded official recognition of their language -- alongside Arabic -- in regions in which they predominate, a Syrian Turkmen official said Wednesday in Geneva.

“We insist -- and are working on -- securing a constitutional right to using our mother tongue,” Emin Bozoglan, secretary-general of the Syrian Turkmen Assembly, told Anadolu Agency.

“We demand that our language be made the second official language, alongside Arabic, in majority-Turkmen areas,” Bozoglan said, adding that they had the support of other opposition groups.

The Syrian Turkmen Assembly is currently participating -- as part of an opposition delegation -- in the ongoing fourth round of Syria peace talks in Geneva.

Regarding the talks, Bozoglan said the opposition’s primary demand was for an interim Syrian administration established on the basis of UN Security Council Resolution 2254.

Bozoglan went on to assert that Russia had failed to keep its promises -- on the need to maintain Syria’s fragile ceasefire -- made at last month’s talks in Astana.

Syrian opposition and regime representatives met in the Kazakh capital on Jan. 23 and 24 to discuss the terms of a ceasefire brokered earlier by Turkey and Russia.

“Russia turns a blind eye to the Assad regime’s ceasefire violations. It [Russia] is not being objective; it continues to show support for the regime,” the Turkmen official said.

He went on to say the regime sought to prolong the negotiation process in the belief that this was in its best interest.

“The regime feels it has an advantage as it controls most of Syria and -- on the international level -- has the support of both Russia and Iran,” Bozoglan said.

He added that the opposition hoped for a breakthrough of sorts by the new administration of U.S. President Donald Trump.

“The opposition is waiting for a miracle from Trump,” he said. “Because Trump rejects the Obama administration’s previous actions and appears to have new plans for the process.”

Bozoglan said that, following the recent liberation of the town of Al-Bab from Daesh, the next target should be the towns of Manbij and Tal Abyad, which are now under the control of the PYD terrorist group, the PKK terrorist group’s Syrian affiliate.

“This way, Turkey can contain or eliminate the terror nests,” he said, noting that such steps were “essential” to any future advance on the city of Raqqa, Daesh’s primary stronghold in Syria.

One positive thing about this war is that it has greatly weakened the racist Arab nationalists.
