Turkish Navy adopts new high-sea strategy

ISTANBUL- Hürriyet Daily News
Turkey’s Naval Forces aim to protect lanes of communication on the high seas to assure global maritime security and protect national interests under an austere defense budget as part of its new strategy, a top Turkish Navy commander has said.

“Our force planners use strategic decision-making, focusing on sophisticated, modular designs that allow us to move toward economy in our operations with fewer crew and lower fuel costs. The objective is to maintain and develop a credible naval force despite budget constraints,” Admiral E. Murat Bilgel, commander of the Turkish Naval Forces, said in an interview in the March issue of Proceedings, a monthly magazine published by the United States Naval Institute.

For these purposes, the Navy must be a versatile, well-trained, and well-equipped force that can be deployed at strategic distances, Bilgel said, adding that the force must be “fully interoperable with its military and nonmilitary counterparts while protecting sea lanes of communication and being prepared to support joint and combined land activities from the sea.”

To achieve these goals, the Navy will make the best use of Turkey’s shipbuilding and design capacity at domestic naval and private shipyards, research centers, and via the defense industry, the admiral said.

The top commander also gave information on the Navy’s future strategy. In the short term, the Navy will improve its situational awareness capabilities by adding corvettes and patrol boats to its fleet. Within a decade, the Turkish Naval Forces will focus on conducting operations other than war by building a reconfigurable landing platform with airlift capability, a combat-support ship, multifunctional frigates with unmanned and manned rotary-wing aircraft, as well as air-independent propulsion submarines.

The Navy aims to advance its limited-strike ability over the next 20 years through the acquisition of a multipurpose landing platform with organic short take-off and vertical landing (STOVL) aircraft, air defense frigates and unmanned underwater vehicles.

The Turkish Navy is already planning to buy the design for its first landing platform dock (LPD) Three Turkish-led groups are currently vying for the contract that will be worth between $500 million and $1 billion.

Turkey is expected to spend more than $4 billion on defense procurement this year. In recent years it has focused on Navy programs. Multibillion-dollar naval programs have included the joint production of six modern submarines with Germany, as well as the largely local manufacture of eight corvettes.

“In line with [our] objectives, we will continue to sustain operational effectiveness and a deterrent posture through innovation, maintaining the strategy and technology interface, exploiting indigenous capacity, prioritizing projects and continuous manpower education and training,” Bilgel said.

POLITICS - Turkish Navy adopts new high-sea strategy

bro its gonna be F-35B not C

for instance Juan Carlos has a 201.9m-long and 32m-wide flight deck with a 12? sky-jump facility for VSTOL aircraft!

so for our LHD, dont know... the number will be the same most probably! but I am not sure about anything anymore :)!!!!

However, in the news it says ours will be 24.000 t and 140??? meters

for the sake of comparison;

Dokdo class: Tonnage: 14,300 tons (empty) / 18,800 tons (full) Length:199 m (653 ft)??
Juan Carlos : Tonnage:27,079 tons (24'560 as a.c.c.) Length:230.82 m (757.3 ft)??

so we can safely assume that there is something wrong with this news!

-with in 10 years we ll have an operational LHD
-with in 20 years there will be F-35B s on our LHD

but still Its officially a LPD!!!

Well, goverment denied the plans for aircraft carrier... I don't know what this guy is talking about but I thought it was the goverment who would decide what we are going to buy for military....

Turkey does not have Intention to built Aircraft Carrier like the french Charles de Gaulles, which is Capable to carry up to 40 Fighter Jets. Turkish Navy seek Capabillities for limited Strike Capabillities far away from turkish Shores for example Balkan and arabian Sea. Not only the LHD alone will enable TN to fullfill such Task in Future also TF-2000 AAW Destroyers and U-214 AIP Submarines which can launch SOM-ER LACM !

McDonnell Douglas AV-8

We could get a few of these for cheap and upgrade them.

They are not exactly "cheap". $30 mio is pretty expensive, and an LHD of 140 M? will only be able to carry few of these, so the operation efficiency will be pretty limited in case of war. As another member suggested, a Juan Carlos class light aircraft carrier with capacity for VSTOL landing is much more efficient.

Edit:I am confused about this stuff. Don't judge me :what:

Buying some AV-8B Harrier could not make Sense as far turkish Navy does not operate any LHD or Light Aircraft Carrier, the LHD will enter in Service in around 10 Years. In this Time F-35 B is ready to enter in Service !

if you have only 2 of f-35B on deck of Dokdo like LPD without using elevators and hangars..F-35B can take off vertically with limited fuel and armament (without using a ramp)
limited but critical, anti radar, anti ship, air support capability gives you an advantage..at least better than nothing..
what about jet blast ? :undecided: there sould be a solution...
if LPD has 15 knots + 5 knots head wind = 20 knots...hmmm..

Since the ship is going to be built, the addition of this capability is important. It is not obviously not going to be used as a typical carrier, not even like the UK carriers were used. But it is an important operational capability for a number of reasons.

The LHD will most likely will operate both jet Aircraft and Helicopter, Since there is not a single LPD or LHD that fully uses only jet Aircraft. It will mostly hold Utility Helicopter aircraft like the Ones on an USS Wasp class LHD. But also small number of Attack Helos (Obviously SuperCobras) and F35B. Since There will not be a huge number of F35B Purchased i think Finance will not be a problem.

Take a look on an average Wasp Class LHD:

This is my gues on how our LHD will look like.

Russia to foray into India’s civil aviation market
“Hindustan Aeronautics Limited (HAL) and the Sukhoi Design Bureau have started work on the preliminary design of the fifth generation fighter aircraft (FGFA), the Indian variant of Russia’s Perspective Multi-role Fighter (PMF)," the UAC chief said.

“We’re working as one team. Indian specialists are in Moscow, while a Russian team is in Bangalore.”

Pogosyan also said Russia and India plan to sign by July a preliminary design contract for the Multirole Transport Aircraft (MTA), which the two countries will jointly build for their air forces.
