They should do whats cheaper and faster. If Altays can be produced faster and cheaper why not go for the Altays instead of upgrading old hardware?

There were earlier plans to upgrade Leo's and M60's but the Generals were arrested in Balyoz operation.
During operation ES we saw how weak German Leo's are against modern ATGW or MANPATS. Some damaged M-60 T's were easily repaired and joined again at ES. We will use Leo's and M-60T's at least for the next 10 years until we have an operational fleet of Altay's.

Our Leo's should have been already upgraded to NG. It was a stupid move to cancel the upgrades and than to slow Altay production down. Just shows how incompentent the government can be.

NG upgrade didn't have an Active Protection System so it would've been a waste of money.

I believe that more M60-A3 will be upgraded.
Germany makes problems delivering even spare parts.

The upgrade program will be administered by Turkey’s procurement agency, the Undersecretariat for Defense Industries (SSM). It will involve modernization work on 40 M60A3, 40 Leopard II A4 and 120 M60T tanks.

Plus option:

30+ M60T; 250+ Leopard2A4 ve 500+ M60A3

Some sources claim that the active protection system could be bought from Israil until AKKOR will be operational.

Turkish M60-T with Aselsan Sarp turret, addon armor, sensor suite and smoke grenade launchers. Al-BAB region Syria.

If a missile is detected a simple device generates smoke. The smoke obscures laser light often used for guidance, and makes it difficult for the missile operator to see the target. By the time the missile reaches the large opaque cloud of smoke, the tank is likely not where it should be.

The Turkish defense industry is working on the Akkor APS as an option for the new Altay tank and other vehicle programs. Main contractor for the development of the Akkor active protection system is the defense electronics company Aselsan, which also developed the fire control system for the Altay aswell as Leopard 1 and Leopard 2 upgrades. It was first reveiled at the IDEF 2015 exhibition mounted on a 6x6 Arma infantry fighting vehicle. According to Aselsan, the development of the Akkor sensor units started in 2008, the development of the countermeasure was intiated in 2010. The APS is to be ready for series production by 2017. Supposedly Turkey wants to equip the Altay tank with this APS.

The Akkor APS
The Akkor active protection system consists of soft and hardkill measures. The softkill part of the system uses laser warning sensors to trigger the vehicle's smoke grenade dischargers. It apparently doesn't feature an IR jammer. The hardkill system is composed of a central computing unit, four flat radar panels and two twin launchers for the countermeasures. The interceptors appear to be HE blast grenades based on the available photographs of the system. It is not known if the system is designed with a capability to defeat APFSDS (like AVePS, AWiSS and Iron Fist) or is designed to defeat ATGMs and RPGs only (like LEDS-150 and Iron Fist LC).

Will Turkey allow any Pakistani firm to license produce their armored vehicles?
