Turkish jets hit Qandil in night raid

Turkish warplanes bombed areas of northern Iraq in a bid to target rear bases of the outlawed Kurdistan Workers' Party (PKK) overnight into today.

Military sources said four F-16 warplanes that took off from an airbase in Malatya at around 11:30 p.m. struck four locations around the Kandil Mountains based on intelligence gathered on the ground moments earlier, Doğan news agency reported.

Rural areas around the villages of Bermka, Sekanya, Sorgul and Bukriska were struck in the raid, a local source said. A PKK member reportedly told the AFP that the outlawed group suffered no casualties "but some farms and orchards were damaged."

The Turkish Armed Forces did not make any statements regarding the outcome of the raid.

The PKK is recognized as a terrorist organization by Turkey, the United States and the European Union.
