DOHA: Qatar has concluded a 5 billion euro ($5.91 billion) deal with Italy for seven navy vessels, the Qatari foreign minister said on Wednesday, part of a military cooperation agreement between the two countries.

H E Sheikh Mohammed bin Abdulrahman Al Thani made the announcement at a news conference with his Italian counterpart Angelino Alfano in Doha after talks about efforts to end a rift between Qatar and four Arab states.

"I am pleased to announce the conclusion of a deal between the Qatari Emiri Naval Forces to buy 7 naval units from Italy in the context of the joint military cooperation between the two countries," Sheikh Mohammed said.

He said the deal was estimated at 5 billion euros but gave no further details and did not name the companies involved.

In June last year Italy's state-controlled shipbuilder Fincantieri said it had signed a 4-billion-euro agreement to build ships for Qatar.

At the time Fincantieri said it would supply the Gulf Arab state with four corvette warships, two support vessels and an
amphibious landing platform dock, along with support services in Qatar for 15 years after delivery.

All the ships will be built in Italian shipyards, with construction starting in 2018, it said. Italian defence company Leonardo would supply electronics and weapons systems for the ships and receive around a third of the value of the deal, a company official said at the time.

Qatar is embroiled in a dispute with Saudi Arabia, Bahrain, the United Arab Emirates and Egypt, which accuse it of supporting Islamists and regional foe Iran, charges Doha denies.

Of the current crisis, Alfano said Italy supported mediation efforts to end the dispute.

Alfano also said he was concerned for citizens in the region who were suffering as a result of the fallout.

Come on dude, let's not pretend we are equal to Italy yet (politically and industry). We have still got a long way to go before we are recognised internationally for our Defence products. :) in the meantime though, they have purchased alot of patrol boats from Ares.

Turkey is the charity house of muslim world, everybody expects something from it but it never gets returned.
The worst is many people in our own country are pleased with this situation because it makes them feel like heroes.

To be honest,I would have considered it as backstabbing if I was Turk.

Maybe the Turks should let Qatar at the mercy of its neighbors. :partay:
Why would you consider it as backstabbing? Qatar is a sovereign country, they can buy whatever products from whatever country they wish. And just because Turkey supported Qatar in the diplomatic row, doesn't mean they need to hand over their sovereignty to Turkey. Sovereignty was one of the main arguments in this crisis to begin with.

Yeah but they could have return some favor.

To be honest our shipyards are full to the brim. If Qatar or any other state were to purchase multiple ships from Corvette or Frigate, we could only deliver them in 5-6 years time since their hands are already full with Turkish Navy requests.

Besides, we haven't developed a proper Frigate yet... but that's whole different story.

How about we first build more shipyards and expand those we already have to even be able to modernise our own Navy much faster before we start trying to sell nonexistent Frigates to other countries? We don't have one I-Class in our own inventory and won't have the first one the next 2-3 years and people get angry at Qatar for not buying them from us, like seriously people? Do they owe us for helping them ? Yes but you can't expect them to wait 10 years to get a Frigate when they can get 4 from Italy the next 5 years.

Wasnt Saudi Arabia gonna invest some 400 billion or something in Turkey?
Not that i believed it but now that this is gone i would expect something from Qatar.

But you know what i wont even blame them its the usual incompetent foreign policy of our country, we will loose more and more if our stubborn politians dont wake up from their delusion.

SA would never buy something from us as their US masters wouldn't allow them to do it. Maybe if they get more independent and that is a big fat if we can see them invest into Turkish military equipment until then they will only buy from the US.

We should concentrate more on Ukraine, Pakistan, Qatar, Tunisia, Indonesia, Malaysia and maybe some balkan countries and easter europe countries like Hungary. Also we should build contacts in South America, there is much money to be made from there.
