The Pentagon has awarded a contract for the sale of an unspecified number of BLU-109 bunker bursting bombs to Turkey.

Ellwood National Forge and General Dynamics Ordnance and Tactical Systems have been awarded a $682,900,000 foreign military sales contract (Turkey) for BLU-109 penetrator bomb bodies and components.

The estimated completion date of Dec. 31 for this project is 2020, a Pentagon release said.

BLU-109s have been in the Pentagon’s inventory since 1985 and are reported to have been deployed on fighters in Iraq and Afghanistan. It was mated to a laser-guided system during operation Desert Storm in Iraq.

The BLU-109 has been sold to key US allies including Israel, Saudi Arabia and UAE. However, this is the first reported sale of the bomb to Turkey.

The bomb contains 550 pounds of high explosive Tritonal, a combination of 80% TNT and 20% aluminum powder. The BLU-109’s tail fuze delays the bomb’s detonation until the bomb has penetrated the targeted bunker, ensuring complete destruction of the location, according to available literature on the bomb.

What happened to Turkish indigenous bunker buster bomb
Those US made bombs will be used only on F-16Block 50M which are the newest F-16 in TUAF.
These aircrafts can only use US made bombs and missiles, for now. If the US agrees to open source codes of these jets, the Turkish Airforce will integrate indigenous bombs and missiles to them.
The Turkish Airforce has 30 F-16 Block 50M and 72 F-16 Block 50.
According to an agreement between the US and Turkiye regarding the F-16 CCIP modernization, Turrkiye can equip and integrate a variety of Turkish made missiles, guided bombs and electronics on F-16 Block 30/40 CCIP models.

NEB is a dumb bomb that was developed specifically to mimic a MK-82. If what you say is true, NEB can be kitted out with JDAM or Paveway kit for plane-bomb interface.. no need to tinker around with source codes..

Then why did we buy these bunker bursters when we have our own?

I don't know.. But I'm certain of one thing, NEB being a multipart bomb.. Mk-82 shaped Casing, Shaped Charge, Penetrator warhead, Crush Fuze, Rear Fuze + man hours required to screw it all together .. does not equate to a cheap bomb.

What do you make of this, only $70 million instead of the claimed $682,900.000?
