Turkey says in Patriot missile talks with U.S.

MARCH 1, 2019

ANKARA (Reuters) - Turkey and the United States are in talks over Washington’s offer to sell a Patriot missile defence system to Ankara, Turkey’s Foreign Minister Mevlut Cavusoglu said on Friday.

“The United States said they could sell Patriots, and the delegations are negotiating”, Cavusoglu was quoted as saying by news agency Anadolu.

Cavusoglu’s comments came after Bloomberg reported that Turkey had rejected a U.S. proposal to deliver a Patriot missile system by the end of the year.

During negotiations, the United States said it could deliver one system earlier, following Turkish objections to the delivery times, Cavusoglu said according to Anadolu. He added the possibility of joint production or a transfer of technology were also important for Ankara.

While offering the Patriots to Turkey, the United States has warned its NATO ally against buying a Russian missile defence system, saying it cannot be integrated into NATO air defences.

President Tayyip Erdogan has said Turkey remains committed to the deal for the Russian S-400 surface-to-air missile defence system.

“They (S-400s) will be delivered towards the end of this year in autumn. We bought S-400s because we could not purchase Patriots,” Cavusoglu said.

U.S. officials have said that if Turkey proceeds with the S-400 purchase, Washington would withdraw its offer to sell the $3.5 billion Raytheon Co missile package, and could block the sale of fighter jets to Turkey and impose sanctions.

Recent Pak-India tussle must have changed their minds.....

Now, how to recall the defense products sold to India???? The Indians have kicked on the tummies of the defense companies....

It is impossible for the US side to NOT know that the S-400 procurement is a done deal by now. Assuming that Turkey does indeed procure the Patriot system, wouldn't that help with normalizing the relations and moving the F-35 contract forward at the same time?

Turkey might just be able to solve both problems simultaneously if they play this right.

I imagine the US thinks that if they can sell and seal the deal on patriot missiles, they can push Turkey into cancelling the S400, using the Patriot and F35 as a reason. But I imagine that Turkey knows or has experienced such things before so They'll do a tough request just barely crossing the line of what the US might be pushed into on the patriots. Mean while Turkey will play for time and keep kicking the ball back to the US court, and make sure they're the ones at fault for being slow or delaying the finalization of the patriot deal.

Once S400 is delivered game over. I hope that our F35 can land on our damn soil before that time though.

Could the comment "saying it cannot be integrated into NATO air defences" be a hint? You can use S400s but separated?

American trashtalk... as always.

Slovakia, Bulgaria and Greece are S-300 operators, so why is it not possible to integrate S-400 even though Turkish officials claimed that they will use Turkish software codes and friend-foe identification programs.
