If Pakistan is helping America on Afghansitan, least we should expect America to use its leverage over India in resolving the Kashmir issue according to the wishes of Kashmiri people.

The sad reality is that Kashmir issue would have been resolved long time ago but not for the China factor. Having read various papers from 1960s it is apparent the West wanted to sort out Kashmir and regarded it as in their interests to do so. The Pak/India rivalry annoys weestern powers as they would prefer the successor states of the British Raj to fall under their strategic umbrella rather then fight between each other.

However the strong effort in 1960s to resolve the Kashmir issue by US and British officials became stuck because of Indian obduracy. That obduracy was borne out of Indian realization that the west would only push India so far because it needed it to stand against China. The Chinese threat had become real when the 1962 Sino-India war broke out and western powers rushed to help India. With the China card in their hands the Indians could play about until the mediation effort ran out of steam.

Pakistan was ' helping' the US since the Soviet invasion of AF , did the US help then ?

No one helps anyone in the world of Intl politics - unless they have something to gain from it.

As far as the Indo Pak issue is concerned, the whole world stands to lose if an accord is reached between India & Pak.

The biggest beneficiary [other than Pak/India] would be USA if K was resolved. In fact I am surprised why Americans have not put enough effort into this. I think political myopia and distance has prevented the American establishment from sorting this out. They will be losers as well. Maybe Trump has seen that because he does not look through the lens of establishment in Washington.

The reason why USA will be loser if K is not resolved? Over the long term Pakistan will have no choice to fall more into the Chinese orbit, particularly as that countries economy overtakes US and begins to exert massive centrifugal force on all it's neighbours. It's already pulling in Kazakstan etc. United States will never be able to contain China without Pakistan. That is a fact of geography that can't be changed.

As much as there has been some awakening in Pakistan that placing all eggs in Beijing is not such a smaret thing, I think US will find out placing all eggs in New Delhi is not going to give them what they want. To stitch China properly Pakistan is also needed.

If you have taken the time to read on the subject you will know it was Musharaf behind Kargil. Nawaz was too thick to understand the complexity of the subject and when informed believed the claim that Kashmir would fall in Pakistan's lap like a ripe mango.

The reality was Musharaf wa about to repeat the same mistake Pakistan had made in 1965. The assumption that if you got India's neck in a armlock, as it panicked it would not kick your testicles to free itself. Of course Musharaf tried and failed. When the mango did not fall in their lap both Mush and Nawaz turned on each other. What do they say? Success has 1,000 fathers, failure is a orphan.
